Advicor – Managing Cholesterol |
|
Advicor is a combination drug generally used to manage cholesterol. Niacin/Lovastatin, the chemical name for this drug, is prescribed when other, non-medicinal methods do not work to lower bad cholesterol and fats in a person’s system. Advicor should only be considered after dietary changes, weight loss and an increased exercise regime have proven unsuccessful. The Niacin or nicotinic acid in Advicor is one of the B-complex vitamins, B3. It is capable of reducing the liver’s production of cholesterol and increasing production of the enzyme that breaks down fat. Lovastatin is a drug, part of the statin family, that also reduces the liver’s natural production of cholesterol. Combined in Advicor, these substances are prescribed to lower a person’s LDL or “bad” cholesterol and triglycerides or fats and at the same time help to raise HDL or “good” cholesterol levels. Niacin/Lovastatin is generally coupled with a special diet to help reduce risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke. While Advicor may help with lowering cholesterol, it is not without the potential of dangerous side effects. When taking this drug, contact a physician immediately if experiencing any symptoms of allergic reaction, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, feeling faint, muscle pain or weakness with fever and flu-like symptoms and dark coloured urine. Other side effects that may occur with Advicor include sweating or chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, back pain, rash warmth and tingling under the skin. If experiencing these side effects and they worsen or do not subside, contact a doctor. As with most of these types of drugs, a prescription from a licensed physician is required by pharmacies in Canada. |
