Alesse is a low dosage oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel. It is primarily prescribed to prevent pregnancy and may be used to treat some menopausal symptoms as well as to regulate menstrual cycles. Alesse is a combination of oestrogen and progestin.

The combination of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel contained in Alesse is used to prevent ovulation. In addition to inhibiting ovulation, Alesse will alter the composition of cervical mucus to hinder sperm from reaching the uterus. As a final recourse, it will also alter the lining of the uterus to obstruct fertilized eggs from attaching to the lining. Because of the hormones within this drug, it may also help regulate menstrual cycles or lessen the effects of some menopausal symptoms. When taken as directed, oral contraception has been found to be 99 percent effective.

Alesse may be effective for its intended purpose, but there may be mild or severe side effects as a result of taking it. Some of the more mild potential side effects may include nausea, vomiting, bloating, breast tenderness, changes in weight, headache, dizziness, fatigue, or vaginal discharge. It is not uncommon to experience breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first few months of taking Alesse. Serious side effects will require immediate medical attention and may include confusion, sudden or severe headache, chest pain, jaundice, or sudden numbness. Oral contraceptives should not be taken when pregnant. Smoking while taking this drug may increase the risk of severe side effects, like stroke or cardiac arrest.
