Research has found that bodyweight training can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23174542\">increase flexibility<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23210120\">boost both metabolism<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22994393\">muscle strength<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet despite its benefits, many people are puzzled by body weight exercise, even though it\u2019s fairly simple. \u201cBody weight training is the use of one&#8217;s own body as their tool of resistance along with the force of gravity,\u201d says strength-training expert Mike Clancy, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/mikeclancytraining.com\">MikeClancyTraining<\/a> in New York City. \u201cIn simple terms, it&#8217;s exercising using one&#8217;s body as a weight. It involves manipulating the position of one&#8217;s body to work various muscle groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since our bodies are by their nature designed to perform various motions and movements, says Clancy, body weight training is a great way to complement these motions and movements. A body weight exercise routine involves moving quickly from one exercise to the next, taking seconds-long rests in between each one to spike both heart rate and calorie burn. According to a 2012 study in the <em>Journal of Athletic Training,<\/em> these short bursts of exercise are just as effective as standard two-hour sweat sessions.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say dumbbells and kettlebells don\u2019t offer exercise value. But body weight exercises allow you to work and tone different muscle groups, and may reduce your injury risk. It also means you\u2019re not limited to the gym for a workout\u2014good new for busy people everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bonus:<\/strong> Body weight exercises are low impact, or joint-friendly, so you can do them as often as you need or like. You can add them to an already established routine or gradually introduce them to maximize your workout. \u00a0A study published in the journal <em>Medicine &amp; Science in Sports and Exercise <\/em>found that a person\u2019s physical performance and muscle size benefits regardless of what a person does first.<\/p>\n<p>And body weight training can be adjusted to any age and fitness level. \u00a0\u201cI have personally noticed that general bodyweight strength improves as age increases, to the surprise of many,\u201d says Clancy. \u201cThe trick is to go back to basics. Mastering the foundational movements will help establish a strong base and core.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also won\u2019t bulk you up. &#8220;Women typically don\u2019t gain size from strength training\u2014they have 10 to 30 times less of the hormones that cause muscle hypertrophy,&#8221;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellandgoodnyc.com\/2012\/12\/03\/7-reasons-women-should-lift-heavy-weights\/\">says\u00a0Joey Gonzalez<\/a>, owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wellandgoodnyc.com\/2012\/04\/25\/barrys-bootcamp-announces-two-new-locations%E2%80%94tribeca-and-wainscott\/\">Barry&#8217;s Bootcamp<\/a> New York. And there\u2019s no getting around it: Building muscle is what plays a key role in a person reducing their overall body fat, says Gonzalez.<\/p>\n<p>And if you don\u2019t work on your muscle mass, you\u2019ll affect your metabolism. Losing muscle mass increases the risk of developing metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2014-06\/tuhs-rim061714.php\"> research<\/a> from Tufts University. \u00a0Although this loss can naturally occur as we age, the same research also finds strength training may help that old muscle grow.<\/p>\n<p>Clancy advises bodyweight beginners to start out by holding certain positions in proper form for an extended time; then add contractions and dynamic motions. For example, develop static strength in a push-up by holding your body still with perfect form (hips and shoulders at the same level, head up, elbows locked out). Then, as with any other exercise, progress the more comfortable you feel.<\/p>\n<p>Some of Clancy\u2019s favorite body weight moves focus on the lower body: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benbruno.com\/wp\/assets\/single-bridge.jpg\">Leg Hip Bridges<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitbie.com\/sites\/default\/files\/WH1109FW006.jpg\">Leg Raises<\/a> (hold with straight legs), <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.vogue.com.au\/media\/article-steps\/4\/1\/9\/0\/41983-1_asl.jpg?\">Stationary Lunges<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fitbie.com\/sites\/default\/files\/FITLIFE_SingLegRomDeadlight1B.jpg\">Leg RDL<\/a> (aka Romanian Deadlifts), and <a href=\"http:\/\/nofaplife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/body-weight-squat.jpg\">Deep Squats<\/a> (with a pause at the\u00a0bottom).<\/p>\n<p><a
