Luckily, treating anxiety disorders is common. Many people who suffer from anxiety talk to a therapist, take medication, or even try calming activities such as yoga and meditation.<\/p>\n<p>But <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3762204\/\">science also shows<\/a> a connection between the foods we eat\u2014more specifically the types of nutrients and at what frequency we consume them\u2014and our mental health. A one-cup serving contains 24 percent of the daily recommended vitamin C intake.\u00a0Blueberries are especially rich in antioxidant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whfoods.com\/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&amp;dbid=119\">flavonoids<\/a> called anthocyanin, which give blueberries their color. Add them to your morning oats or cereal, or just snack on them any time of day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Almonds<\/strong><br \/>\nAlmonds are rich in the mineral selenium, which has been linked to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23156049\">stress reduction<\/a>. It gets better, too: almonds have B vitamins and magnesium, which help <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24936175\">produce serotonin<\/a>\u2014a key chemical known to regulate mood and relieve anxiety. Stick to a hearty handful (about 23 almonds) for a heart-healthy and stress-reducing snack. Alternatively, spread almond butter on toast or add chopped almonds to a salad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oatmeal<br \/>\n<\/strong>Complex carbs also boast plenty of serotonin power\u2014and oatmeal is a <a href=\"http:\/\/mentalhealthdaily.com\/2015\/04\/06\/foods-that-increase-serotonin-tryptophan-carbohydrates\/\">perfect source<\/a> of these healthy carbohydrates. Just remember to skip the instant oatmeal, which has added sugar. Plus, the old-fashioned rolled oats are thicker and supply more fiber. You\u2019ll stay full longer, and those calming effects may remain in the body for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asparagus<br \/>\n<\/strong>Nobody can pass on a delicious side of roasted asparagus topped with a bit of Parmesan cheese. And perhaps for good reason: Asparagus is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whfoods.com\/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&amp;dbid=63\">chock-full<\/a> of folic acid. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19909688\">Studies suggest<\/a> there\u2019s a connection between depression and low levels of folic acid, so make sure to get in your greens. Asparagus is also great in omelets, or steamed and paired with your favorite dip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avocados<br \/>\n<\/strong>Similar to folic acid, lack of vitamin b12 may be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3856388\/\">another cause<\/a> of anxiety and depression. The solution is delicious: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anavocadoaday.com\/2012\/12\/vitamin-b12.html\">Avocados are rich<\/a> in this vitamin, and can easily be added to almost any meal. Enjoy avocado toast for breakfast, throw an avocado in a smoothie, add one to a salad, or go all-out at the next Mexican feast. Just remember that avocados are also high in fat (albeit the healthy kind), so stick to one serving\u2014roughly 1\/5<sup>th<\/sup> of the fruit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turkey<br \/>\n<\/strong>The amino acid tryptophan may make you sleepy, but it also helps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naturalnews.com\/028324_L-tryptophan_stress.html\">combat stress<\/a>. Here\u2019s how: It helps usher certain neurotransmitters throughout the body, such as serotonin\u2014which helps improve moods. Aside from a hearty turkey breast sandwich, <a href=\"http:\/\/nutritiondata.self.com\/foods-000079000000000000000.html\">other foods<\/a> such as spinach and egg whites also feature good levels of tryptophan. Anyone want a turkey, egg, and spinach sandwich for breakfast?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kefir<br \/>\n<\/strong>Kefir is a fermented dairy drink, usually made with cow&#8217;s or goat&#8217;s milk. Scientists have discovered that having an unhealthy gut (aka <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2011\/05\/110517110315.htm\">bacterial imbalances<\/a>) can change brain chemistry. Kefir is a great food to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23391011\">promote gut health<\/a>, since it\u2019s full of probiotics and other essential nutrients. Try drinking it straight up, or use it in salad dressing, a veggie dip, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/gnowfglins.com\/2009\/08\/07\/seven-yummy-ways-to-eat-kefir\/\">kefir cheese<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salmon<br \/>\n<\/strong>Bring on the salmon avocado rolls. Scientists have recently discovered an interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21784145\">link<\/a> between eating salmon and reducing stress. Consuming 2.5 grams of omega-3s\u2014or eating 12 ounces of salmon, a nice serving size\u2014can reduce anxiety by more than 20 percent. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/healthy-aging\/omega-3-fatty-acids-fact-sheet\">Omega 3s<\/a> are fatty acids that not only have stress-busting abilities, but can also lower triglycerides (bad fats) and help ease joint pain. Omega 3s are found in other fish including anchovies, mackerel, and tuna. Not a fish fan? Try fish oil supplements instead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tea<br \/>\n<\/strong>Ah, a nice hot cup of tea. Of course it\u2019s known for making you feel calm, and now there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23625424\">some science<\/a> to back it up. The amino acid <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18296328\">L-theanine<\/a> which is found in green tea has a direct effect on the brain, and can help lower a thumping heart rate and reduce blood pressure. Chamomile tea is another nice option; some of its compounds <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.com\/health\/gallery\/0,,20669377_2,00.html\">act similarly<\/a> as anxiety medications such as Valium. Try drinking a cup before bed at night: It could help promote relaxation and a good night\u2019s rest, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Turmeric (Curcumin)<br \/>\n<\/strong>Science has found a connection between this yellow spice and the prevention of anxiety disorders. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25550171\">Curcumin boosts<\/a> a specific acid in the brain that\u2019s connected to reducing anxiety and strengthening the brain. Some say it could even be more powerful than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23832433\">certain drugs<\/a> used to treat depression. It\u2019s common in many Indian cuisines, but you can add it to egg scrambles, roasted vegetables, rice, or even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thekitchn.com\/7-ways-to-eat-drink-turmeric-198696\">tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dark chocolate<br \/>\n<\/strong>We definitely can\u2019t skip dessert. The stress-busting antioxidants found in blueberries are also found in cocoa. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.com\/health\/article\/0,,20428125,00.html\">One research study<\/a> had participants eat dark chocolate for two weeks and discovered reductions in certain stress hormones in the brain. Just remember healthy moderation in the chocolate consumption. Still, it\u2019s possible to have too much of a good thing. The reason? Caffeine is a stimulant, which is why some of us feel jittery after that third cup. In fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15732884\">studies suggest<\/a> too much caffeine can increase anxiety, since caffeine stimulates the body\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/moneybox\/2014\/09\/25\/coffee_science_caffeine_induces_adrenaline_release_reduces_rem_sleep_and.html\">&#8220;fight or flight&#8221; response.<\/a> Coffee lovers don\u2019t need to fret: These symptoms <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/caffeine\/art-20045678\">typically occur<\/a> when people consume more than 500 milligrams of caffeine, which is equivalent to four or more cups of coffee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sugar<br \/>\n<\/strong>While sugar doesn\u2019t cause anxiety, it can <a href=\"http:\/\/drhoffman.com\/article\/panic-attacks-and-anxiety-2\/\">destabilize brain activity<\/a>, which can then heighten symptoms of anxiety and even trigger anxiety attacks. Not ready to put down those M&amp;Ms just yet? Scientists have also uncovered a connection between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12415536\">sugar and depression<\/a>. While cutting sugar completely out of your diet is pretty tricky, the American Heart Association recommends a maximum of <a href=\"http:\/\/authoritynutrition.com\/how-much-sugar-per-day\/\">nine teaspoons<\/a> of sugar a day, depending on gender.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alcohol<br \/>\n<\/strong>Feeling stressed? One too many glasses of wine may not do the trick to smooth your spirit. Alcohol <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15704346\">changes levels of serotonin<\/a> in the brain. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical, but too much alcohol can lower its levels. This means you can end up feeling more anxious once the short-term affects of alcohol subside. Plus, the highly refined sweetener high fructose corn syrup is also found in most processed foods, and we all know how sugar can affect stress levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Salt<br \/>\n<\/strong>Eating food with too much salt <a href=\"http:\/\/hyper.ahajournals.org\/content\/36\/5\/890.full\">increases blood pressure<\/a>, which makes the heart need to pump harder. And when that happens, the body releases the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heart.org\/HEARTORG\/Conditions\/HighBloodPressure\/PreventionTreatmentofHighBloodPressure\/Stress-and-Blood-Pressure_UCM_301883_Article.jsp\">stress hormone adrenaline<\/a>\u2014which paves the way for anxious feelings.
