Coffee drinkers of all ages have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2017\/jul\/10\/coffee-cuts-risk-of-dying-from-stroke-and-heart-disease-study-suggests\">lower risk of mortality<\/a> from stroke, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, and kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether the effect is due to the beverage itself or other lifestyle factors, but coffee does boast some nutritional benefits. It\u2019s naturally bitter, which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liversupport.com\/cold-coffee-drinks-your-liver-will-love\/\">benefits<\/a> the liver and gall bladder, and it\u2019s rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that protect cells from damage. Coffee also contains caffeine, a stimulant that gives most people a temporary <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.jhu.edu\/2014\/01\/12\/caffeine-enhances-memory\/\">mental boost<\/a>. And a moderate intake of caffeine, up to 400 mg a day, appears to be safe for adults, according to a 2017 systematic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmedhealth\/behindtheheadlines\/news\/2017-04-26-four-cups-of-coffee-not-bad-for-health-suggests-review\/\">review<\/a> of studies. (However, it\u2019s linked to headaches, high blood pressure, anxiety, and insomnia, so consider cutting back if you experience those effects.)<\/p>\n<p>Coffee mostly gets a green light from health experts, but that\u2019s without double dipping into the sugar bowl. Diets high in refined sugar are <a href=\"http:\/\/health.usnews.com\/health-news\/health-wellness\/articles\/2016-01-22\/9-reasons-to-eat-less-sugar-that-have-nothing-to-do-with-weight-loss\">linked to<\/a> obesity, diabetes, depression, acne, liver disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/eating-too-much-added-sugar-increases-the-risk-of-dying-with-heart-disease-201402067021\">heart disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/2016\/01\/06\/study-links-sugar-to-cancer-how-to-reduce-your-risk.html\">cancer<\/a>. Your favorite sweet espresso drink may have far more sugar than you think. Action on Sugar, a British advocacy group, warns that <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2016\/02\/17\/news\/companies\/sugar-coffee-drinks\/index.html\">35 percent<\/a> of the drinks sold in coffee shops contain as much sugar as a can of Coca Cola. Unfortunately, artificial sugar substitutes aren\u2019t healthy either; they\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3198517\/\">linked to<\/a> obesity and other health risks.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, you don\u2019t need to switch to black coffee to enjoy the benefits of drinking coffee. Try these tasty and healthy additives.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Unsweetened cocoa powder<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Listen up, mocha lovers: There may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplespharmacy.com\/2017\/03\/08\/why-should-you-put-cocoa-in-your-coffee\/\">health benefits<\/a> to mixing cocoa with coffee. In one study, people who added cocoa to their coffee were less anxious than those who drank coffee alone, and they performed better on cognitive tasks than those who drank cocoa alone. It\u2019s worth noting that the study was funded by the chocolate maker Hershey. However, scientists have uncovered reasons why a coffee and cocoa combo may provide health benefits. Cocoa contains flavanols, which relax the blood vessels and lower blood pressure, and coffee contains compounds called methylxanthines, which improve the body\u2019s ability to absorb and use flavanols. Plus, cocoa also comes with the benefit of its <a href=\"http:\/\/veryverytasty.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/unsweetened-cocoa-powder-ftw.html\">delicious chocolate taste<\/a>. One caution: Check the ingredients and be sure to buy unsweetened cocoa. Many cocoa mixes are sweetened with refined sugar or artificial sweeteners.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cinnamon<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A pinch of spice makes coffee nice. Cinnamon isn\u2019t just a classic cappuccino topper; it\u2019s also a traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3854496\/\">medicine<\/a> used all over the world. Studies suggest it may <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/diet\/supplement-guide-cinnamon\">lower blood sugar<\/a> in people with diabetes. Moreover, lab research indicates cinnamon and coffee may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24874360\">work synergistically<\/a> to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits in the body. Human studies are needed, but in the meantime, enjoy your coffee with a teaspoon of cinnamon for its warm, spicy taste and smell.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Vanilla extract<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Just catching a whiff of vanilla <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/chemse\/article\/30\/suppl_1\/i248\/270387\/Effects-of-Fragrance-on-Emotions-Moods-and\">makes people feel happy and relaxed<\/a>. Like coffee, pure vanilla extract is rich in antioxidants, and lab studies suggest it may also have <a href=\"http:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/jf071349%2B\">anti-inflammatory<\/a> properties. Add a few drops to your mug or a teaspoon to your grounds before you brew them to make your own flavored java.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Orange juice<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It may sound strange, but some people are singing the praises of joffee. (For the uninitiated that\u2019s juice plus coffee.) Think of joffee as coffee with citrus notes. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.extracrispy.com\/food\/1240\/why-is-phoenix-obsessed-with-mixing-orange-juice-and-espresso\">Orange juice layered with iced espresso<\/a> is popular in Phoenix, Arizona, where coffee shops sell it under names such as OJ Express and Sunrise. Orange juice is rich in vitamin C, but it\u2019s probably better to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2014\/02\/misunderstanding-orange-juice-as-a-health-drink\/283579\/\">skip highly processed varieties<\/a> and opt for fresh-squeezed. Not everyone loves the complex flavor, but you won\u2019t know until you try.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Butter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Want to transform your coffee into a nourishing breakfast broth? Jump on this Paleo craze and add a tablespoon of grass-fed butter to your morning cup of joe. Grass-fed butter not only tastes delicious; it contains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecowatch.com\/why-grass-fed-butter-is-one-of-the-healthiest-fats-on-the-planet-1882015252.html\">more than 400 different fatty acids<\/a> and is high in vitamin K2. Although nutritionists decried saturated fat for decades, the <a href=\"http:\/\/health.usnews.com\/wellness\/food\/articles\/2016-10-28\/5-reasons-to-start-eating-full-fat-dairy-according-to-science\">latest research<\/a> suggests people who eat full-fat dairy products are less likely to be overweight, have a lower risk of diabetes, and have a decreased risk of heart attack and stroke than people who eat the least fat.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Coconut oil<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Now that saturated fats are back in favor, health-conscious consumers are embracing coconut oil. The flavorful fat has long been revered by tropical cultures for its culinary uses and health benefits. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid, which the body readily <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11746-014-2562-7\">converts<\/a> into energy for the brain and heart instead of storing it as fat. The best part? Coconut oil tastes decadent and delicious. To prevent forming an oil slick on top of your coffee, let your coffee cool slightly, add a tablespoon of coconut oil, and blend it in a blender.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Ground coconut flakes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you enjoy the flavor and aroma of coconut but not the fat, add a tablespoon of ground coconut flakes to your coffee grounds before you brew your coffee. Shredded coconut is high in <a href=\"http:\/\/healthyeating.sfgate.com\/benefits-eating-shredded-coconut-4027.html\">iron, zinc, and other nutrients<\/a>. It has been added to green, oolong, and black <a href=\"http:\/\/www.herbalteasonline.com\/coconut-tea.php\">teas<\/a> because of its flavor and health benefits.
