But if you mindlessly move your toothbrush around your mouth, your oral hygiene routine may be ineffective or worse: It may be harming your tooth enamel. Keep reading to learn the best way to floss and brush to keep your teeth and gums healthy.<\/p>\n<h2>Bone Up on Brushing<\/h2>\n<p>Humans have been brushing their teeth since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afrostylemag.com\/ASM7\/chewingstick.html\">3500 B.C. In ancient Babylonia<\/a> people chewed on the ends of sticks to create a frayed end for tooth scrubbing. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/mouth-health-how-long-hav_b_683535\">Over time and across cultures<\/a>, people have constructed toothbrushes out of sticks, bones, and animal hairs, and made toothpaste and tooth powder out of everything from ox-hoof ash to burnt eggshells. In the last 150 years or so, tooth brushing has become a much more common practice with the help of modern brushes and paste. In 1873 Colgate was the first to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colgate.com\/en-us\/oral-health\/basics\/brushing-and-flossing\/history-of-toothbrushes-and-toothpastes\">mass produce toothpaste<\/a>, selling it in jars. Sixty-five years later, the modern nylon toothbrush was born.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like we\u2019d have mastered oral hygiene by now, but many of us have room for improvement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/health\/most-us-have-tooth-decay-study-finds-t20781\">Ninety-one percent<\/a> of American adults have decay in their permanent teeth, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perio.org\/consumer\/cdc-study.htm\">47 percent<\/a> of people over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease. If it\u2019s been a while since anyone showed you how to brush and floss, it may be time for a refresher course on the current recommendations for optimizing oral health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/How-to-Floss-and-Brush-Your-Teeth-Better_001.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3307\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/How-to-Floss-and-Brush-Your-Teeth-Better_001.png\" alt=\"How to Floss and Brush Your Teeth Better\" width=\"1067\" height=\"3022\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/How-to-Floss-and-Brush-Your-Teeth-Better_001.png 1067w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/How-to-Floss-and-Brush-Your-Teeth-Better_001-212x600.png 212w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/How-to-Floss-and-Brush-Your-Teeth-Better_001-723x2048.png 723w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1067px) 100vw, 1067px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Don\u2019t Let These Mistakes Harm Your Oral Health<\/h2>\n<p>If you brush and floss as recommended but still have concerns about your dental health, you may be making one of these common mistakes.<\/p>\n<h3>Disregarding your diet<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, oral hygiene is essential, but a good diet is crucial for healthy teeth and gums. Cultures that eat traditional diets have very low rates of tooth decay. As soon as sugars and processed carbohydrates are introduced, dental cavities increase. Deficiencies in iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin C, and other nutrients are also known to cause cavities, gum disease, and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3272860\/\">oral disease<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p>Aim for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/food\/vitamins-and-supplements\/nutrient-rich-foods\/healthy-nutrition-for-healthy-teeth\">balanced diet<\/a> of minimally processed whole grains, vegetables, fruit, and protein. Limit eating between meals, and if you do snack, choose raw vegetables, firm fruit, or nuts. It\u2019s okay to enjoy occasional refined carbs or sweet treats, but your teeth are likely better off if you eat them with a meal. One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3272860\/#B10\">study<\/a> suggests eating sugar with a meal doesn\u2019t increase the risk of tooth decay, but snacking on sugar or refined carbs between meals does.<\/p>\n<h3>Not minding your microbiome<\/h3>\n<p>Are you trying to eradicate the germs in your mouth with a heavy-duty antibacterial mouthwash or antimicrobial toothpaste? Hold up! Germs are not the enemy we once thought they were. In fact, most of them are your friends.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably heard of the human microbiome, the trillions of bacteria and fungi that live in and on our bodies. Hundreds of species of organisms live in your mouth, and they\u2019re organized in ecosystems that could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/phenomena\/2016\/01\/25\/the-forest-in-your-mouth\/\">compared to forest ecosystems<\/a>. When your oral ecosystems are balanced and healthy, microbes work symbiotically to maintain health throughout your body. For instance, some of your oral microbes help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3605573\/\">reduce blood pressure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line? You want most of the microbes in your mouth to stay put to keep pathogenic bacteria in check. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blodgettdentalcare.com\/is-mouthwash-bad-for-you\/\">Be cautious<\/a> about disrupting your oral microbiome with <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0088645\">antibacterial mouthwash<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/today.oregonstate.edu\/archives\/2016\/may\/common-antimicrobial-agent-rapidly-disrupts-gut-bacteria\">antibacterial toothpaste<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5378909\/\">antibiotics<\/a> (unless absolutely necessary).<\/p>\n<h3>Doing too much of a good thing<\/h3>\n<p>If you squeeze a big dollop of toothpaste on your brush several times a day, scrub your teeth like you\u2019d scour a dirty sink, or clean your teeth the minute you finish a meal, you may harm your tooth enamel. Even brushing with a soft brush and toothpaste has been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4623835\/\">cause some enamel erosion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To keep your enamel strong, avoid acidic beverages such as juice and soda, and wait about an hour after eating to brush. Acidic meals soften your tooth enamel and make it more likely to erode when brushing. Use only a pea-sized amount of a non-abrasive toothpaste, hold your toothbrush with a loose grip, and brush gently. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21701198\">Some studies<\/a> suggest fluoride may help deter enamel erosion, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-18154-8#Sec2\">more current research<\/a> implies it doesn\u2019t make a difference. (However, fluoride is helpful for cavity prevention, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/oral-health\/news\/20180815\/study-fluoride-crucial-to-prevent-cavities\">studies<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s often said that the mouth is a mirror of health or disease in the body.
