We\u2019ve all been there at one time or another. <a href=\"https:\/\/aasm.org\/resources\/factsheets\/insomnia.pdf\">Thirty percent of adults<\/a> have trouble getting to sleep or staying\nasleep on any given night. If sleeplessness is a regular pattern in your life,\nyou know the downsides all too well. A poor night of sleep can lead to\ngrogginess, poor memory, and an inability to concentrate the next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, taking\nsleep medication isn\u2019t a good long-term solution for most people because those\ndrugs can be habit-forming and pose side effects. The key to getting to sleep\nis to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2012\/sep\/22\/dreamland-insomnia-sleep-cbt-drugs\">relax and forget your worries<\/a>, but that can be easier said than done. The\ngood news is, you don\u2019t have to go it alone. Relaxation podcasts can help when\ncombined with other sleep-enhancing practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Embrace a Sleep-Enhancing Lifestyle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be hard\nto overstate the benefits of sleep. Sleeping well can help you maintain a\nhealthy weight, improve concentration, maximize athletic performance, prevent\nchronic diseases, and improve immune function. But don\u2019t panic if you don\u2019t\nsleep as well as you\u2019d like. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be\ngetting more sleep than you think. Many people underestimate how much sleep they\nget. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2012\/sep\/22\/dreamland-insomnia-sleep-cbt-drugs\">sleep lab s<\/a>tudies, some patients who took 10 minutes to fall\nasleep thought it took them an hour. And some patients who insisted they didn\u2019t\nget any sleep actually slept quite a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, even if you\ndon\u2019t get enough sleep, you can improve your chances of sleeping well. Paradoxically,\nyou may want to start by improving your mornings. Studies suggest spending time\noutside in the sunshine first thing in the morning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-sleep-daylight\/morning-daylight-exposure-tied-to-a-good-nights-sleep-idUSKCN18E23E\">regulates<\/a>\ncortisol, serotonin, and melatonin rhythms all day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also want\nto go easy on caffeine after noon. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1402564\/pdf\/brjclinpharm00282-0023.pdf\">one study<\/a>,\nwhen middle-aged people drank 300 milligrams of caffeine before bed, it took\nthem 66 minutes to fall asleep and they ended up getting two fewer hours of\nsleep. In another study, drinking caffeine even <a href=\"http:\/\/jcsm.aasm.org\/viewabstract.aspx?pid=29198\">six\nhours before bedtime<\/a> interfered with\nsleep. It may also be a good idea to skip a nightcap, too. Alcohol reduces the\ntime it takes to fall asleep, but it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4666864\/\">interferes with your body\u2019s sleep cycles<\/a>, which can leave you feeling more exhausted\nthe next day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the\nabove sleep-enhancing practices, a relaxation podcast may be just the thing to\nhelp you forget your worries and relax. While most podcasts are designed to keep\nyou riveted and engaged and <a href=\"http:\/\/freakonomics.com\/podcast\/this-is-your-brain-on-podcasts\/\">activate your entire brain in the process<\/a>, relaxation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/health\/wellness\/sleep-apps-insomnia\/\">podcasters strive<\/a> to capture your attention just enough to keep\nyou from thinking and\/or worrying but not so much that you stay awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"2652\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Improve-Your-Sleep-to-Improve-Your-Health_001.png\" alt=\"Zen Out with These Relaxation Podcasts\" class=\"wp-image-3499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Improve-Your-Sleep-to-Improve-Your-Health_001.png 1068w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Improve-Your-Sleep-to-Improve-Your-Health_001-242x600.png 242w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Improve-Your-Sleep-to-Improve-Your-Health_001-825x2048.png 825w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1068px) 100vw, 1068px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Institute a Calming Bedtime Routine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the best\nchances of a good night of sleep, combine a relaxation podcast with a calming\nbedtime ritual. Go to bed at the same time each night. Dim the lights 30 to 60\nminutes before bedtime, and take a few minutes to write down any worries and\nmake a to-do list for the next day. Then curl up with a relaxing podcast. You\nmay need to try a few podcasts before you find the one that helps you drift\noff. Try one of these popular picks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepwithmepodcast.com\/\">Sleep With Me<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you long for\nsomeone to tell you a long, meandering, nonsensical bedtime story, Drew\nAckerman (a.k.a. Scooter) created your dream podcast. In his words, he uses \u201clulling,\nsoothing, creaky dulcet tones; pointless meanders; and superfluous tangents\u201d to\nhelp you relax and drift off to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepwithmepodcast.com\/category\/game-of-drones\/\">Game of Drones<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this offshoot\nof <em>Sleep With Me<\/em>, Drew Ackerman\ndevotes his rambling, nonsensical storytelling to <em>Game of Thrones<\/em> recaps. Somehow, he manages to turn the riveting, action-adventure\ntelevision fantasy into boring, meandering, sleep-inducing tales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepyradio.com\/\">Sleepy<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If reading <em>The Picture of\nDorian Gray<\/em>, <em>Of Mice and Men, <\/em>or\nanother classic ever put you to sleep, imagine how sleepy you\u2019ll be when Otis\nGray reads them to you in a deep, soothing voice. (Plus, if you don\u2019t fall asleep,\nat least you\u2019ll catch up on some classic literature.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nothingmuchhappens.com\/\">Nothing\n     Much Happens: Bedtime Stories for Grown-ups<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Katherine\nNicolai is on a mission to use her relaxing voice and storytelling ability to help\nyou turn off your brain and fall asleep. \u201cLet\nme tell you a bedtime story. It&#8217;s a simple story, in which nothing much\nhappens, you feel good, and then you fall asleep,\u201d she writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepwhispers.com\/\">Sleep Whispers<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For some people, listening\nto someone whispering can trigger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/asmr-can-it-help-relax-sleep\">Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response, or ASMR<\/a>, a pleasurable, tingling, and relaxing\nsensation in the scalp or spine. If you\u2019re in that camp, <em>Sleep Whispers<\/em> may be the sleepy-time podcast for you. The host\ncalls himself Whispering Harris, and he\u2019ll lull you to sleep by rambling and whispering\nstories, poems, fables, and articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/podcast\/fiction\">The\n     New Yorker Fiction<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>New Yorker<\/em>\nfiction editor Deborah Triesman is not explicitly trying to put you to sleep in\n<em>The New Yorker Fiction Podcast<\/em>, but\nit may do the trick anyway. Triesman has a silky, smooth voice, and she invites\nfamous literary authors to read short stories written by other famous literary\nauthors.
