In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/why-we-always-get-sick-on-road-and-how-to-prevent-it\/\">one study<\/a>, 20 percent of plane passengers reported respiratory symptoms within a week of flying. No one wants to get sick on a trip\u2014or directly after one. Keep reading to learn how to prevent illnesses during and after your next vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Get up to date on travel vaccines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s fun to learn about new cultures. It\u2019s not so fun to come into contact with new diseases. Fortunately, vaccines are available to protect you from many illnesses. Visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/travel\">Center for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s (CDC) website<\/a> to find travel recommendations for your destination. Depending on where you\u2019re going, you may need a yellow fever vaccine. It\u2019s required for entry into many countries in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/yellowfever\/vaccine\/index.html\">Africa and South America<\/a>. The CDC recommends certain other vaccines, including typhoid and Japanese encephalitis, for travel in other areas. If you\u2019re planning an international trip, book an appointment with a travel health specialist a couple of months before you leave to make sure you\u2019re protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Rest and get plenty of sleep<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Long flights, time changes, and schedule disruptions can make it hard to stay on your sleep schedule. But adequate sleep is crucial to staying healthy. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/news\/stories\/archives\/2015\/august\/sleep-and-sickness.html\">one study<\/a>, researchers tracked participants\u2019 sleep with Fitbit-like devices and sleep diaries for one week and then exposed them to a cold virus. The participants who slept five to six hours a night were four times more likely to catch a cold than those who slept more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/6-tips-for-better-sleep-when-you-travel\">improve your sleep when you travel<\/a>, expose yourself to bright sunshine in the morning, which will help your circadian rhythm sync with the local schedule. Get plenty of exercise during the day (which you can build into your itinerary in the form of walking or biking from point A to point B). You can also consider taking a melatonin supplement a half-hour before bedtime. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12076414\">In studies<\/a>, it helps prevent and reduce jet lag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides sleep, don\u2019t forget to pencil in time for relaxing and resting during your trip. Permit yourself a daily nap if you desire. And if possible, take an extra day off to recover from your trip before you return to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1068\" height=\"3824\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/how-to-cut-down-your-chances-og-getting-sick-during-or-after-a-vacation-final.png\" alt=\"How to Cut Down Your Chances of Getting Sick During or After a Vacation \" class=\"wp-image-3618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/how-to-cut-down-your-chances-og-getting-sick-during-or-after-a-vacation-final.png 1068w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/how-to-cut-down-your-chances-og-getting-sick-during-or-after-a-vacation-final-572x2048.png 572w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1068px) 100vw, 1068px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Stay hydrated<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not imagining that the air on planes feels dry. The relative humidity on planes averages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/healthy-travel\/air-travel-and-dehydration.aspx\">around 10 to 20 percent<\/a>. For comparison, the relative humidity in the Sahara Desert is <a href=\"https:\/\/saharadesertinfo.weebly.com\/humidity.html\">25 percent<\/a>, and the humidity in your home is probably between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralhtg.com\/blog\/managing-home-humidity-for-maximum-comfort\">30 and 45 percent<\/a>. To compound the problem, most travelers <a href=\"https:\/\/dripdrop.com\/blogs\/news\/does-air-travel-increase-the-risk-for-dehydration\">drink fewer fluids<\/a> when they\u2019re airborne. Skip coffee and alcohol, which are diuretics, and drink plenty of water on your next flight. Hydration will help keep your digestion on track and your nasal passages moist, which may help you stay healthy. Dry nasal passages are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/common-cold\">more susceptible<\/a> to viruses. If you\u2019ll be on a long flight, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/healthy-travel\/air-travel-and-dehydration.aspx\">bringing<\/a> along a saline nasal spray and use it as directed on the bottle. Don\u2019t forget to keep up your water intake once you arrive at your destination. Pack a water filter if you\u2019re heading somewhere with a water advisory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Keep your hands clean<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have heard that the air in an airplane cabin is 100 percent recirculated, but that\u2019s a myth. Airplane ventilation systems draw air from outside then filter and continually replace it. Of course, you can still catch a bug on the plane. If you\u2019re sitting within one or two rows of a sick airline passenger, you have about a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidescience.org\/news\/studying-how-germs-spread-plane-0\">3 percent chance<\/a> of getting sick. If you\u2019re sitting next to a sick person, your odds jump to 80 percent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re more likely to pick up a virus on your hands and transfer it to your nose or mouth than to breathe it in. To lower your risk, be careful about what you touch, keep your hands away from your face, and wash your hands as frequently as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) allows disinfectant wipes on airplanes, so you can bring some along if you wish. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rd.com\/home\/cleaning-organizing\/times-never-use-antibacterial-wipes\/\">use them correctly<\/a> or they won\u2019t work. The solution in wipes needs to be visibly wet on surfaces for at least four minutes, and you must use a separate wipe for every area. (If you wipe everything down quickly as most people do, you\u2019ll only spread germs around.) Also, note that the harsh chemicals in disinfectant wipes can irritate lungs and skin, and the packaging instructs users to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womensvoices.org\/2015\/07\/31\/tip-of-the-month-watch-out-for-disinfectant-wipes\/\">wash their hands<\/a> after using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Stay active<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be looking forward to a vacation from your exercise routine, but it\u2019s a good idea to stay active on your trip. Physical activity lowers stress and <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007165.htm\">increases your immunity<\/a> to certain diseases. Even short-term bursts of activity (or breaks from it) may impact your immune function. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26542343\">one study<\/a>, when a group of mice exercised for three weeks, their immune systems were more efficient when responding to a pneumonia virus than mice who didn\u2019t exercise during the same period. Long-term studies suggest the same may be true for humans. People randomly assigned to exercise got 15 percent fewer colds in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29933369\">one study<\/a> than those who didn\u2019t exercise. And at least three other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/David_Nieman\/publication\/15131721_The_immune_response_to_exercise\/links\/577661fa08aeb9427e2786b0\/The-immune-response-to-exercise.pdf\">randomized studies<\/a> suggest people get sick less often when they exercise nearly every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bon Voyage!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these tips to feel your best on your next vacation, and you\u2019ll bring home souvenirs and memories instead of germs and bugs. And don\u2019t forget to enjoy yourself! Laughter decreases stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/04\/100426113058.htm\">enhances immune activity<\/a>.
