Life is good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you reach for your phone and check your social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instantly, you\u2019re immersed in other people\u2019s lives. You study the perfectly lit images of beautiful homes, joyful children, and adorable pets. You read accounts of the parties your acquaintances hosted and learn about their upcoming European vacations. Suddenly, your bedroom looks pathetic with its piles of laundry and its carpet in desperate need of a vacuum. You drag yourself out of bed feeling depressed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone with social media accounts knows the appeal of mindlessly scrolling, as well as the gratification inspired by sharing personal highlights with friends and strangers. But longtime users may also know a thing or two about social media obsession, burnout, bullying, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursingtimes.net\/news\/mental-health\/how-use-of-social-media-and-social-comparison-affect-mental-health-24-02-2020\/\">the mental health dangers<\/a> of comparing ourselves and our lives with the carefully curated images we see on our screens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/your-brain-on-social-media-plus-the-benefits-of-setting-boundaries-001-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Your Brain on Social Media: Plus the Benefits of Setting Boundaries\" style=\"width:100%;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are You Addicted?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What would you do if you had a spare three hours and 15 minutes a day? That\u2019s how <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.rescuetime.com\/screen-time-stats-2018\/\">much time the average person spends on their phone<\/a>, according to an analysis of RescueTime app data. Top users spend a whopping four and a half hours a day scrolling and tapping. According to another study, we touch our phones <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.dscout.com\/mobile-touches\">2,617 times a day<\/a>. The numbers don\u2019t lie: Many of us are addicted to our phones, and specifically, to social media.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, and the like can keep us connected with friends and family members and build communities around common interests and goals. However, spending too much time on social media also contributes to anxiety and depression. Hours spent <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-doomscrolling-and-how-to-avoid-it\/\">doomscrolling<\/a> can leave us feeling helpless and hopeless. Heated social and political debates, whether we\u2019re a witness or a participant, can enrage us. The constant pinging of notifications makes us <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/291618379_Silence_Your_Phones_Smartphone_Notifications_Increase_Inattention_and_Hyperactivity_Symptoms\">inattentive, unproductive<\/a>, and tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Cut Back<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Limiting social media to 30 minutes a day can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/328838624_No_More_FOMO_Limiting_Social_Media_Decreases_Loneliness_and_Depression\">decrease feelings of depression and loneliness<\/a>, according to a study. Use the hours you save to catch up in person or via Zoom with <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0217264\">friends<\/a>, pursue a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.karger.com\/Article\/FullText\/503571\">favorite hobby<\/a>, or get a coffee and <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/1948550613502990\">chat for a moment with your barista<\/a>. Research suggests all these actions can boost your mood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, it can be difficult to kick the social media habit. Here are some ways to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Delete the social media apps on your phone&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You may naturally cut down if social media is more difficult to access. Of course, you can still access social media using your web browser, and you may want to give yourself permission to mindfully check your accounts for ten minutes over a mid-morning coffee break or lunch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Download a time-tracking app<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re sneaking extra minutes, consider downloading an app such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.systweak.com\/social-fever\">Social Fever<\/a>, which tracks the time you spend on various websites. When you look at the hard numbers on your phone habits, it may inspire a behavior change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hide your phone<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re still spending more than half an hour a day accessing social media on your phone, consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/happiness-is-state-mind\/201907\/social-media-breaks-and-why-they-are-necessary\">putting your phone in another room<\/a> so you can\u2019t see it. When you\u2019re out exercising, leave the phone at home and train yourself to notice your surroundings. Invite friends to join you for a walk, run, or bike ride. Speaking of friends, keep your phone out of sight in a purse or pocket when you share a meal or game night. The visible presence of a phone can <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0265407512453827\">compromise the feeling of closeness and connection<\/a> between people even when physically together.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create a physical reminder<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider placing <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/signs-you-need-to-take-a-break-from-social-media\/#:~:text=What%20is%20a%20social%20media,you%20question%20your%20self%2Dworth\">physical barriers<\/a> on your device. You could install a lock screen with a message reminding you to pause before you automatically log in. Or you could place a rubber band around your phone as a visual reminder of your goals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Download a productivity tool<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Still scrolling? Download a tool such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proginosko.com\/leechblock\/\">LeechBlock<\/a>, which lets you block sites such as Facebook and Snapchat during chosen times and days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Change how you engage<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>What if 30 minutes of social media a day still leaves you angry, anxious, or depressed? Consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityreachcenter.org\/blog\/social-media-and-mental-health-tips-on-setting-boundaries\/\">how you interact with the<\/a> sites. You could resolve to post only positive messages and refrain from negative comments and difficult debates. Or you could hide a difficult person\u2019s posts or stop following people who trigger unwanted emotions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Benefits of Limiting Social Media<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking a break from social media can help you <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33395534\/\">sleep better<\/a>, which, in turn, improves your mood. Even if you\u2019re not ready to cut down to 30 minutes of social media a day, turn off your phone an hour before bed. Keep it out of your bedroom and out of sight in another part of the house so you\u2019re not tempted to roll over and check it. You may even want to ask a partner to hide it from you overnight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nervous you\u2019ll miss something when you\u2019re not on social media? Picture this: You wake from a perfect eight hours of sleep and open your eyes to sun streaming through your window. The smell of freshly brewed coffee drifts in from the kitchen. You stretch and smile, climb out of bed, pull on comfortable clothing, sip some coffee, and go for an early-morning walk with the dog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You notice the sun rise. You hear birdsong. You feel the air on your face, and you take a moment to breathe deeply. You\u2019re out in the world, comparing yourself and your life to no one for one blissful moment.
