But, with a few adjustments and\/or additions to your haircare regimen, you can have thicker, silkier, shinier, and healthier locks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep reading to learn how hair changes with age, plus tips to combat some of the most common haircare mistakes. <em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>How Our Hair Changes Over Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As we get older, our hair undergoes several changes. For starters, <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/004005.htm#:~:text=Hair%20strands%20become%20smaller%20and,they%20are%2030%20years%20old.\">hair strands have less pigment<\/a> \u2014 the source of hair color \u2014 than when we were younger. This process makes hair fade to gray. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7667670\/\">studies show<\/a> that chronic scalp inflammation, a condition often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6369642\/\">associated with aging<\/a>, can impact hair growth and hair loss rates. That\u2019s why when we talk about haircare, it\u2019s important to include scalp health, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Common Haircare Mistakes (Plus How to Avoid Them)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to skincare, we all have different needs and preferences when it comes to our hair. With that said, there are some common follicle fallacies that can negatively impact the wellness and beauty of our tresses. We\u2019ve rounded up the top mane mistakes to avoid, plus helpful tips to create and stick to a healthier hair routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1067\" height=\"4473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/dry-brittle-or-frizzy-hair-001.png\" alt=\"Dry, Brittle, or Frizzy Hair? Washing your hair too much can leave it feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/your-guide-to-aging-hair\/\">dry and brittle<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that reason, it may be in your best interest to gradually cut back to washing every other day, or even just once or twice a week depending on your age, hair type, hair length, and activity level. On your off days, you can wear a shower cap to keep your hair dry while you wash your face and neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stripping the natural oils from your hair<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to washing your hair, it\u2019s not just about how often you wash but how you go about it. Squeezing out a giant dollop of shampoo and dispersing it from your scalp to the ends can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/everyday-care\/hair-scalp-care\/hair\/healthy-hair-tips\">dull, frizzy hair<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, focus your shampooing efforts on your scalp. When you rinse, the runoff will pass through the length of your hair, which is a gentler way to cleanse compared to rubbing the shampoo all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rubbing your hair with a towel to dry it <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letting your locks dry without blowing hot air on them can certainly prevent heat-induced damage (more on this in just a sec), but it may harm your hair in other ways. Though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/everyday-care\/hair-scalp-care\/hair\/habits-that-damage-hair\">vigorous towel drying<\/a> may soak up moisture and dry hair faster, this method \u2014 coupled with aggressive twisting and wringing \u2014 can also lead to frizz and breakage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than rub your wet hair with a towel, gently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byrdie.com\/how-to-dry-hair-properly\">squeeze water out with a microfiber towel<\/a>. Then, depending on the length of your locks, you may choose to gently wrap your hair with the towel to dry it further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using too much heat <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2017\/08\/hair-dryer-history\/535566\/\">Hair dryers have come a long way<\/a>, meaning we can regularly dry our hair from the comfort of our homes. But with more access to blow dryers and an ever-changing lineup of hot tools \u2014 from curling and flat irons to hair dryer brushes \u2014 our hair is more susceptible to heat-related <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7413455\/\">weakening and breakage<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The simplest way to prevent heat damage is to let your hair air dry. But depending on your hair type and the style you\u2019d like to achieve, avoiding heat altogether may not be the most realistic option. So how can you cut back on heat without sacrificing a killer hair day? Refer to our trusty first tip: Wash your hair less. Even if you want to touch up some frizzy spots with a hot tool or add some curls, you\u2019ll save your hair from undue heat damage by skipping over an additional blow dry. When you do take a blow dryer or hot tool to your hair, it\u2019s smart to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/best-heat-protectant-spray\">apply a heat protectant spray<\/a> to lock in moisture and reduce damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Damaging hair by pulling on it&nbsp; <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even without hot tools, you can still damage your hair when you style it.
