Keep reading to learn more about caring for your needs throughout menopause and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Does Menopause Affect Your Sex Drive?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the time you start puberty, your ovaries begin <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/22353-estrogen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">making the female sex hormone estrogen<\/a>. It\u2019s responsible for triggering your menstrual cycle and controlling fertility. As you age, your ovaries naturally make less estrogen, and your chances of becoming pregnant decline. If you\u2019re looking for ways to boost your sexual health, we\u2019re here to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let\u2019s Talk About Sex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.menopause.org\/for-women\/menopauseflashes\/sexual-health\/how-to-increase-your-sexual-desire-during-menopause\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Open communication with your partner<\/a> is also key to navigating your declining libido with menopause. Maybe your idea of intimacy is changing but remember that your partner isn\u2019t a mind reader. Take time to sit down together and reconnect about what you want in a sexual relationship. Work together to find experiences that would be enjoyable for you together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also try new ideas \u2014 whether you go shopping for new toys or magazines at your local adult boutique or take time to build a new routine. Intimacy can be more than sex, as well. Massages, shared baths, caressing, and other activities can be just as special as intercourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Managing Vaginal Dryness and Discomfort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While menopause symptoms can be uncomfortable and dampen your libido, many of them can be treated with medications. Consider making a doctor\u2019s appointment to talk about ways to address your symptoms and take control of your sexual health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re experiencing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vaginal-atrophy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">vaginal dryness and pain during sex<\/a>, it\u2019s likely because your vaginal walls are thinning. This occurs when your estrogen levels drop. You may also notice you need to urinate more often or you\u2019re having recurrent urinary tract infections. Doctors refer to this as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vaginal-atrophy\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20352288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your doctor can give you tips for managing vaginal dryness and even prescribe you medications to help. Vaginal moisturizers can add some much-needed moisture back to the area. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mskcc.org\/cancer-care\/patient-education\/vaginal-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Examples recommended by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center<\/a> include Revaree\u00ae, HYALO GYN\u00ae, and Replens<sup>TM<\/sup> Long-Lasting Vaginal Moisturizer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water-based lubricants are also great to use right before intercourse for a smooth experience. Pick up a bottle of K-Y Jelly or other lubricant of your choice next time you\u2019re at the drugstore. Some even have special warming properties to spice things up in the bedroom \u2014 but be careful, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vaginal-atrophy\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20352294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">you may be sensitive to the ingredients<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some prescriptions are also useful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vaginal-atrophy\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20352294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">for treating vaginal dryness<\/a> and uncomfortable symptoms associated with menopause. Your doctor can give you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Topical estrogen creams or suppositories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vaginal inserts that deliver hormones directly to the vagina<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-hormonal treatments like ospemifene (Osphena), a daily pill to treat moderate-to-severe GSM<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking Care of Your Physical and Mental Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We all know it\u2019s important to stick with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/askthedoctor\/healthy-weight-loss-strategies\">healthy diet<\/a>, get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/fit-over-40\">regular exercise<\/a>, and seek help when we need it. But it\u2019s also much easier said than done. Your body is going through many changes during menopause, and it\u2019s normal to feel uncomfortable or out of place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try adding more vegetables like beets or leafy greens to your diet. Studies show that they contain nitrates that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22882425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">help relax your blood vessels<\/a> and can improve blood flow to the vaginal area. Soy products like tofu and tempeh contain plant-based estrogens that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26440219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">may help improve perimenopausal and postmenopausal symptoms<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mental health is just as important as your physical well-being. These exercises <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menopause.org\/for-women\/sexual-health-menopause-online\/effective-treatments-for-sexual-problems\/yoga-kegel-exercises-pelvic-floor-physical-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">work the muscles in your pelvic floor<\/a>, which is responsible for supporting your bladder and uterus above the vagina. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9859482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Working your pelvic floor muscles<\/a> can help reduce pain during sex and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9859482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">improve urinary symptoms<\/a> you may experience during menopause and after.
