Spend less! Find love!\u2014will fall from 75 to 46%, says a study published in the <i><a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/10.1002\/(ISSN)1097-4679\">Journal of Clinical Psychology<\/a>. <\/i>Add age into the mix and 39% of people in their twenties will keep their resolutions at all compared to 14% of people ages 50 and over.<\/p>\n<p>As depressing as that sounds, goals are not hopeless. It <i>is <\/i>possible to stay motivated in the months that follow January. The trick is to make a plan and go for it.<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, we\u2019ve rounded up a few tips to help get you started.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Think big picture\u2026<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When it comes to weight loss, the bigger, more challenging the goal, the better, finds research in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthpromotionjournal.com\/\"><i>American Journal of Health Promotion<\/i><\/a>. A challenging goal requires more planning, like how exactly you\u2019ll achieve it and recover from possible setbacks, thus a stronger will to see it through. Think a half marathon instead of a 5k and going vegetarian instead of meatless on Mondays.<\/p>\n<p>But be careful not to over-plan, says a study in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ejcr.org\/\"><i>Journal of Consumer Research<\/i><\/a>. When you overestimate what you can get done, you\u2019ll start to worry anything can get done and just not do anything at all.<\/p>\n<h4><b>\u2026but be realistic<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>You want to challenge yourself within reason. \u201cWhen people start to realize that their projections were wrong, they begin to feel overwhelmed,\u201d says Amy Dalton, PhD, an assistant professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not to say <i>don\u2019t<\/i> reach for the stars. By all means, do. But make sure it\u2019s line with your past successes. Dramatically straying from those initial methods can make it harder to achieve new goals.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Check in with yourself<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>Depression has long been associated with overgeneralizing, says researchers from the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.liv.ac.uk\/2013\/07\/08\/people-with-depression-tend-to-pursue-generalised-goals\/\">University of Liverpool, and their study<\/a> finds that when you\u2019re depressed, you don\u2019t make specific goals. Without details, it\u2019s harder to envision yourself succeeding.<\/p>\n<p>Clearing those mental blocks, be it depression, anxiety or stress, can help you set up a better path for success. And often times, the solutions are in-line with other goals, e.g., massage for well-being and yoga to calm down.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Get personal<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>The busier people you know are the best untapped source of inspiration. Seeing someone you know has a longer to-do list longer than yours still go to yoga or walk in with a packed lunch, makes your schedule seem manageable. You\u2019re less overwhelmed and aware of the time you have to work on your resolutions.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Progression, not perfection<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s called orthorexia\u2014a disorder where a person is obsessed with perfect, clean eating\u2014and it\u2019s not a good idea. A restrictive diet, or a generally obsessive attitude, can actually inhibit weight- and fitness goals.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0195666310000401\">2010 study in the journal <i>Appetite <\/i><\/a>, the simpler your diet, the easier it is to stick to it. What that means: eat as healthy as you can, when you can. Don\u2019t beat yourself up over that cookie and take a minute to enjoy what\u2019s on your plate.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to this helpful tip, a 2005 study published in <a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/82\/1\/222S.full\">The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/a>, indicated six key steps to maintaining weight loss.\u00a01) Engaging in high levels of physical activity; 2) Eating a diet that is low in calories and fat; 3) Eating breakfast; 4) Self-monitoring weight on a regular basis; 5) Maintaining a consistent eating pattern; and 6) Catching \u201cslips\u201d before they turn into larger regains.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-581\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AchieveYourGoals_illustration-1-830x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Achieve Your Goals Every Time - List of Steps\" width=\"830\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AchieveYourGoals_illustration-1-830x1024.jpg 830w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AchieveYourGoals_illustration-1-243x300.jpg 243w, https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/AchieveYourGoals_illustration-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><b>Embrace change<\/b><\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s normal to set a goal for yourself, reach the halfway mark and realize it\u2019s not exactly what you intended to do. And that\u2019s OK! It\u2019s just an opportunity to regroup and see what changes should be made to your overall success plan.<\/p>\n<p>Though if your goal has taken a completely wrong turn, then giving up is OK, too. No, you didn\u2019t make it, but it wasn\u2019t all for nothing.
