Keep reading to learn why you may be feeling a dip in your mood and how you can lift it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do I Have the Winter Blues?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During winter, the Earth\u2019s axis tips us away from the sun, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/everyday-mysteries\/meteorology-climatology\/item\/why-is-it-hot-in-summer-and-cold-in-winter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">leading to shorter, colder days<\/a>. This means you\u2019re probably spending less time outdoors and getting less sunlight than normal. Your body\u2019s internal clock or circadian rhythm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/bedroom-environment\/light-and-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">relies on light<\/a> to let you know when it\u2019s time to wake up and fall asleep. Specifically, your brain makes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/healthperch\/melatonin-for-better-sleep-does-it-work\">hormone melatonin to control the sleep-wake cycle<\/a>. Without enough light, you\u2019ll <a href=\"https:\/\/health.unl.edu\/10-tips-beat-winter-blues-plus-difference-between-sad-and-reoccurring-low-mood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">keep making melatonin<\/a> during the day \u2014 which affects your mood and energy levels. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, the winter blues are more than just feeling \u201clow\u201d or lacking energy. SAD is a form of major depressive disorder that affects people during the fall and winter months. According to the American Psychiatry Association, around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">5 percent of the American population<\/a> experiences SAD every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms of SAD are different from the occasional bad day or week. SAD can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">make you feel extremely depressed or sad<\/a> to the point where your mood interferes with your daily activities. Other symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Increased fatigue (mental and physical exhaustion) or energy loss, even if you\u2019re getting enough sleep at night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in your sleep patterns, like sleeping too much<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having trouble thinking, making decisions, or concentrating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of interest in activities or hobbies you usually enjoy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thoughts of suicide or death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you may have SAD, it\u2019s important to talk to your doctor. They\u2019ll prescribe some of the same treatments used for depression, like antidepressants and talk therapy. You can also follow some of the tips below to help lift your mood in addition to your prescribed treatments. Fortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/seasonal-affective-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SAD symptoms tend to get better<\/a> as the seasons change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8 Ways To Lift Your Mood in the Winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Get Some Extra Sunlight<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It may not sound fun during cold weather, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/healthy-living\/mental-wellbeing\/low-mood-and-depression\/do-you-have-the-winter-blues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stepping outside for a walk<\/a> gives you extra sunlight to boost your mood. You\u2019ll also get some fresh air at the same time! If you can\u2019t make it outside, sitting by the window on a bright day also does the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Experts recommend sitting in front of the light for 30 minutes right after you wake up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Take on a New Winter Hobby<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Winter is the perfect time to take up a new sport like downhill or cross-country skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating. Ask friends or family to come along for some company.
