But which position do health experts say is best? It depends on several factors and varies depending on your unique sleep needs. However, sleeping in certain positions helps prevent certain problems or increases your comfort. Keep reading to learn more about how much your sleeping position matters and which one may be best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Is a Good Night\u2019s Sleep So Important?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that you spend nearly one-third of your life asleep? The Sleep Foundation explains that this time of rest helps your body repair itself and recover. Without enough sleep, you\u2019re at a higher risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/sleep-deprivation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">developing chronic health conditions<\/a> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/askthedoctor\/what-is-high-blood-pressure-and-how-should-you-manage-it\">high blood pressure<\/a>, obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/askthedoctor\/coronary-artery-disease-the-causes-symptoms-and-treatments\">heart disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/askthedoctor\/diabetes-prevention-and-treatment\">diabetes<\/a>. You\u2019re also more likely to struggle with focusing, learning, and functioning on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits and Drawbacks to Each Sleeping Position<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s important to find a comfortable sleeping position for the best night\u2019s rest. Your body may naturally find a position as you fall asleep. But you can also set yourself up for comfortable sleeping success by choosing a position while you\u2019re still awake. Here\u2019s what health experts have to say about sleeping on your back, side, and stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back Sleeping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Back sleepers have the benefit of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleeping-positions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">keeping their spines aligned<\/a> throughout the night. This evenly distributes weight along the body, preventing an aching back or neck in the morning. You can also prop your head up on extra pillows to relieve a stuffy nose or seasonal allergies. You may get a better night\u2019s sleep if you sleep on your back with these problems. Since your face doesn\u2019t make direct contact with a pillow, sleeping on your back can also help keep your skin clearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, back sleeping isn\u2019t for everyone. Experts from the Sleep Foundation note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleeping-positions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">back sleeping isn\u2019t recommended<\/a> for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Pregnant women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Older adults<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with a higher body weight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those with certain types of back pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Those with sleep apnea or those who snore, as your tongue and jaw can block your airway<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Sleeping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 60% of people sleep on their sides throughout the night. Interestingly, men sleep on their sides longer every night compared to women. This is a good thing too \u2014 side sleeping is best for correctly aligning your spine, reducing the risk of back pain. Some research also suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/blog\/articles\/2024\/may\/is-there-a-best-sleep-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">sleeping on your right side<\/a> specifically helps clear away waste in cerebrospinal fluid. This can lower your risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northwestpharmacy.com\/askthedoctor\/alzheimers-and-dementia-current-treatments-and-what-the-future-may-offer\">age-related diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a> later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike back sleeping, side sleeping is the preferred position for pregnant women, people with GERD, and those with sleep apnea. If you\u2019re dealing with back pain, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/blog\/articles\/2024\/may\/is-there-a-best-sleep-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">putting a small pillow<\/a> between your knees while lying on your side. It may help bring your spine and hips into alignment for better comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stomach Sleeping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The least popular sleeping position is sleeping on your stomach. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/blog\/articles\/2024\/may\/is-there-a-best-sleep-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">only 10% to 20% of adults<\/a> like sleeping on their stomachs. The Sleep Foundation notes that this position offers the least amount of back support. It actually leads to increased pressure on your spine and makes you twist your neck out of alignment. Without a firm mattress, your hips can also sink into the bed, leaving you in a world of hurt in the morning. People who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleeping-positions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">concerned about back pain<\/a> may want to avoid stomach sleeping. Pressing your face into a pillow all night can lead to acne and wrinkles as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the seemingly endless negatives, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleeping-positions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">still sleep on your stomach<\/a> with the right tools. Experts recommend using a thin pillow or forgoing the pillow altogether to keep your spine in a better alignment. You can also add a thin pillow underneath your hips to bring them in line with your spine. This is especially helpful if you have a softer or older mattress with a dip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Tips for Better Sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your sleeping position isn\u2019t the only aspect of getting a good night\u2019s sleep. You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/choosing-the-best-sleep-position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">take extra steps<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/choosing-the-best-sleep-position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">make your sleep environment more comfortable<\/a>, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping your room dark with blinds or curtains, and opening them as soon as you wake up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making your room a comfortable temperature; for most people, a cooler sleeping environment helps them rest easier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regularly washing your sheets and keeping your room free of dust to avoid a stuffy nose and allergies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also talk to your doctor about treating any underlying health conditions that interfere with your sleep. If you have sleep apnea, you may need a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.
