How High is Too High? Dramatic Price Comparisons Revealed!
In a recent broadcast of First Coast News, reporter Heather Crawford examined the first-hand impact of high prescription drug prices. One Jacksonville, Florida couple cited medication costs of $400 to $1,000 per month as a burden that frequently requires a choice between food and medicine. An increase in the past four years of 187% in the cost of Advair, a medication vital in the treatment of asthma, makes it difficult for the couple living on a fixed income to afford the medicine they require. This is just one of the multiple medications required by this couple on a monthly basis. This situation is becoming all too common and forcing many to reduce or skip their medications.
Findings from 2015 and 2016 Kaiser Family Foundation Health tracking polls reveal that over half (55%) of Americans currently take one prescription and 1 in 5 report taking four or more. It is projected that these numbers will rise as the average age of the American population increases over the next twenty to forty years.
Soaring drug price increases continue to widen the gap between the cost of prescription drugs in the US and other countries. Generic drugs, once thought to be a solution to high medication costs, are not exempt from these rampant price hikes either. The following table reflects data collected in October 2014 in response to a request by Representative E. Cummings and Senator Bernie Sanders for information regarding escalating prices of generic drugs in the USA. We have added current 2016 NorthWestPharmacy.com prices so you can see the dramatic savings in a side-by-side comparison.
