What is Abilify Maintena?

Abilify Maintena (generic name Aripiprazole) is a once-a-month shot (injection) given by a doctor or healthcare provider to treat schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder. It adjusts chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine and serotonin work together to organize thoughts and balance mood.

What is Abilify Maintena used for?

Abilify Maintena helps treat schizophrenia in adults over age 18. It may also be used for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults over age 18. It has not been tested to be safe or effective for children under age 18.

What are Abilify Maintena side effects?

Common Abilify Maintena side effects include weight gain, feeling sleepy, feeling restless, and pain in the arm or buttock where the injection was given.

Call your doctor and go to the closest emergency room if you experience any of the following while taking Abilify Maintena:

  • A medical problem called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) which can cause death.
    • Changes in your breathing

  • Family history of diabetes
  • Dementia or loss of touch with reality
