What is Abilify Maintena?

Abilify Maintena (generic name Aripiprazole) is a once-a-month shot (injection) given by a doctor or healthcare provider to treat schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder. It adjusts chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine and serotonin work together to organize thoughts and balance mood.

What is Abilify Maintena used for?

Abilify Maintena helps treat schizophrenia in adults over age 18. It may also be used for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults over age 18. It has not been tested to be safe or effective for children under age 18.

What are Abilify Maintena side effects?

Common Abilify Maintena side effects include weight gain, feeling sleepy, feeling restless, and pain in the arm or buttock where the injection was given.

Call your doctor and go to the closest emergency room if you experience any of the following while taking Abilify Maintena:

  • A medical problem called neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) which can cause death.
    • Changes in your breathing
    • Changes in your heart rate
    • Changes in blood pressure
    • High body temperature (fever)
    • Feeling sweaty
    • Muscle stiffness
    • Feeling confused
  • Body movements you cannot control (this is called tardive dyskinesia). You may notice twitching in your face, tongue, or other parts of your body. These can linger after you stop Abilify Maintena.
  • Diabetes or high blood sugar. Some people who take Abilify Maintena may see their blood sugar rise, which can put them at risk for developing diabetes. You may feel unusually thirsty, tired, weak, or start to pee more frequently.
  • More fat in your blood. Your doctor will check your blood regularly while using Abilify Maintena because Abilify Maintena side effects include an increase in blood cholesterol and triglycerdes.
  • Low white blood cell count.
  • Low blood pressure. You may feel lightheaded or dizzy, especially when you stand up too fast.
  • Seizures
  • Trouble keeping your body temperature under control (feeling too warm).
  • Strange impulses, and feeling like you cannot control your actions. Some people may have trouble controlling gambling, shopping, binge eating, or acting on sexual urges.
  • May cause deadly strokes in elderly people with memory loss and psychosis.
  • An allergic reaction including rash, itching, hair loss

What you should know before using Abilify Maintena.

Abilify Maintena may affect your judgement, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how Abilify Maintena will make you feel. Avoid too much exercise, staying out in the sun, wearing too much heavy clothing, and taking other medications that may change your body temperature while taking Abilify Maintena. Do not drink alcohol while using this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you take any other prescription or over-the-counter vitamins or supplements because some medicines can interact with Abilify Maintena. Especially tell your doctor if you use clarithromycin, avasimibe, ritonavir, ketoconazole, voriconazole, mibefradil, rifampin, St. John’s wort, phenytoin, or carbamazepine.

If you have any of the following medical conditions, tell your doctor before starting Abilify Maintena:

  • If you have never taken abilify (aripirazole) pills or shots before
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Dementia or loss of touch with reality
  • If you have high blood sugar or diabetes
  • Seizures, or history of seizures
  • Low blood pressure
  • High blood pressure
  • History of stroke
  • Any heart problems
  • Low white blood cells
  • Problems where you can’t get a shot (injection) in your arms or buttocks
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
  • High cholesterol, or a history of high cholesterol
  • High triglycerides, or a history of high triglycerides
  • High prolactin levels, or a history of high prolactin
  • Kidney problems, or a history of kidney problems
