Aggrastat Description

Aggrastat contains Tirofiban, an antiplatelet medication administered in hospital by a healthcare professional as an intravenous infusion for those undergoing surgery that involves the knee or hip joint. This is due to the risk of a blood clot that may develop as a result of limited movement over an extended period time while you are on bed rest.

Although clotting is necessary under most situations, it can also pose serious risks for some patients that could develop a clot in the large blood vessels of their leg that breaks loose and becomes trapped along the way, causing a dangerous blockage to blood flowing to your heart or brain, leading to a heart attack or stroke.

How Antiplatelet Drugs Reduce the Risk of a Blood Clot

When administered as directed, Aggrastat inhibits the production of thromboxane from blood platelets. Platelets are part of the clot-forming cells present in your blood that will help to form a clot to stem bleeding. Thromboxane is a chemical that signals other platelets to help by sticking together to form a clot and stop the bleeding. By interfering with this action, a clot cannot form and cause a potential life threatening risk. Without thromboxane, platelets are actually fragments of cells and cannot form a clot on their own so the risk of a heart attack or stroke is reduced.

Conditions Treated by Aggrastat

Aggrastat may be administered if you are undergoing a coronary stent placement, balloon angioplasty, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or a coronary artery bypass grafting, referred to as CABG and pronounced as cabbage. CABG is performed on those with severe coronary heart disease due to the plaque build-up inside their coronary arteries that has restricted the blood flow to their heart. This can cause chest pain (angina) or tightness, shortness of breath with the slightest exertion, jaw/back/arm pain, or heart palpitations. The pain you feel is your heart muscle telling you it is dying unless blood flow is restored.

A bypass basically means the surgeon will take or ‘harvest’ a portion of healthy blood vessel from your arm, leg, or chest, and bypass the blocked blood vessel to supply your heart with oxygenated blood and nutrients and reduce your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Once you leave hospital, your doctor may prescribe an oral antiplatelet drug to avoid further problems.

Before Aggrastat is Administered

Your doctor can help you decide if the benefits outweigh the risks of receiving Aggrastat while you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Explain other medical conditions or allergies you have to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements so it can be determined if Aggrastat is safe for you.

Aggrastat Precautions

You should not drive or perform any task that may not be safe until your doctor has cleared you to do so. Once you are at home, you may be prescribed oral antiplatelet drugs until you are able to gain more movement and reduce the risk of a clot forming and breaking away. While taking antiplatelet meds, remember that you may have difficulty stopping blood flow from an injury.
