Alinia is an antiprotozoal prescription medication for treating traveler’s diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia or Cryptosporidium parvum. As the name suggests, traveler’s diarrhea usually occurs when visiting high-risk areas in developing countries, such as Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Latin America due to the personal hygiene practices, primitive sanitation facilities, unclean cookware, and untreated water that can result in passing on the microscopic protozoa. Alinia and or generic Nitazoxanide are available as pills, dispersible tablets, or an oral suspension and dosage will depend upon person’s age, cause of infection, and whether you have a compromised immune system. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
Some individuals may have contracted traveler’s diarrhea but are showing no or minimal symptoms of watery stool, abdominal cramps, or nausea and the condition may resolve itself. Others may not be as fortunate and symptoms can appear in a couple of weeks to several months after infection. The delay in symptoms is because the changes in the lining of your intestine are so gradual. Once you take Alinia as directed, the ingredients go to work by interfering with the activity of enzymes that are essential to the parasites in order to survive and reproduce.
Conditions Treated by Alinia
Cryptosporidium (Crypto) have an outer shell that protects them while they are outside of the body for long periods of time and also makes them resistant to chlorine-based disinfectants, which is why Crypto is recognized as one of the most common reasons for human infection from contaminated recreational and drinking water.
Giardia lamblia is found in soil, food, water, and surfaces that have been contaminated with feces from infected humans or animals. While digging in the soil in your garden you could come across feces from an infected animal and unwittingly touch your mouth before you have washed your hands.
That is all it takes in order for you to swallow Giardia cysts that find their way to your intestines and make themselves right at home. Children seem to be more susceptible to exposure to parasites because of their close encounters with others in daycare or play school and their failure to wash their hands after going to the bathroom or before eating.
Before You Take Alinia
Ask your doctor about any harmful effects of taking Alinia while you are pregnant, if you become pregnant, or when you breast feed. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any OTC and Rx drugs you are on, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements so your doctor can determine if Alinia is the right medication for you. The dispersible tablets are ideal for small children that may not know how to swallow a pill or for adults that have difficulties with swallowing.
Warnings for Alinia
Alinia should be taken just after a meal as food can improve the levels of Alinia in your body and makes it easier for your body to absorb this drug. Until you know how your body will react to Alinia, avoid operating a vehicle, machinery, or other activities that could be unsafe.
