BONINE ANTI-NAUSEANT (MECLIZINE HCL)

Bonine Anti-Nauseant Description

Bonine is used to treat or prevent nausea, vomiting and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Meclizine HCl, the active ingredient in Bonine, is an antihistamine with anti-nausea effects. Your doctor may also recommend Bonine or the generic Meclizine HCl to treat symptoms of vertigo (dizziness) caused by diseases or conditions that affect the inner ear. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Reduce the Activity in Your Vomit Center

Bonine prevents nausea and vomiting by reducing the activity of the center in the brain that controls nausea. It also prevents motion sickness by reducing excitability of neurons in the motion and balance center of the brain. Motion sickness usually occurs when you are in a moving car, plane, or boat, but you can also get it watching motion in movies. It is best to take Bonine approximately one hour before you travel because once motion sickness has actually started it is more difficult to get under control. The effects of Bonine can last up to 8 hours.

How Does Motion Sickness Occur?

Motion sickness happens when the inner ear, the eyes, and the deeper tissues of the body’s surface send conflicting signals to the brain. The signals received by the eyes don’t match with those transmitted by the inner ear and our sense of balance is thrown off. This causes the unpleasant symptoms of motion sickness, such as nausea, dizziness, sweating and vomiting.
