What is Brilinta?

Brilinta (generic name Ticagrelor) is a blood thinner. It is used to prevent blood clots. It slows down the way platelets (a type of red blood cells) clump together to form clots. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Blood clots can block an artery and cause serious heart problems, chest pain, heart attacks, and strokes. Brilinta is used to save lives by preventing complications from blood clots.

What is Brilinta used for?

Brilinta is used to prevent blood clots in adults who have had a history of a heart attack or serious chest pain that occurred because their heart could not get enough oxygen. For people who have had a stent placed in their heart to help open a blocked artery, Brilinta can help keep the stent open.

Brilinta may be used with "baby aspirin" or low-dose aspirin to decrease the chances of heart attack, stroke, and severe heart problems in people with a history of a heart attack or acute coronary syndrome (a condition where there is not enough blood flowing into the heart).

For the first year after a heart attack, studies show that Brilinta and baby aspirin work better to prevent blood clots when compared to Plavix (generic name clopidogrel).

What are possible Brilinta side effects?

The most serious side effect of Brilinta is shortness of breath. If you suddenly have trouble breathing when you are resting, or at night, or while you are doing any activity, then call your doctor right away.

Bleeding is the most common side effect of Brilinta. Since Brilinta is a blood thinner, it slows down how quickly blood clots. It's possible to bruise more easily while using Brilinta. It will also take longer for any bleeding to fully stop while using Brilinta.

Unusually serious bleeding resulting from Brilinta may lead to death. Tell your doctor if you experience any of the following signs of bleeding:

  • Tarry black stools

Using Brilinta with other medications can increase your risk of bleeding. Prevent Brilinta side effects by telling your doctor if you use any of the following medications:

  • High dose Aspirin (more than 100mg daily)
  • NSAIDS such as ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) among others
  • Warfarin (Coumadin or Jantoven)
  • Heparin
  • Clopidogrel (Plavix)
  • Ketoconazole
  • Erythromycin
  • Phenytoin
  • Ritonavir
  • Rifampin
  • St. John's Wort
  • Carbamazepine
  • Simvastatin (more than 40mg daily)
  • Lovastatin (more than 40mg daily)
  • Digoxin
  • Opiod pain medicine (such as morphine, oxycodone, Percocet, among others)

Since Brilinta is used to prevent blood clots from forming, stopping Brilinta can result in new blood clots forming. These blood clots may travel to your brain and cause a stroke, or travel to your heart and cause a deadly heart attack; therefore, it's important to continue taking Brilinta regularly unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Prevent Brilinta side effects by using the medication exactly as directed.
