What is Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol?

Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called beta blockers. It is used to lower hypertension, which is also known as high blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure is important, because it helps reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular issues including strokes and heart failure.

Bystolic is most commonly prescribed in Nebivolol 5 mg tablets. The active ingredient in Bystolic is nebivolol hydrochloride, or nebivolol HCL. Nebivolol is a beta adrenergic receptor blocking agent and may also be a nitric oxide potentiating ingredient. Researchers are still working to understand exactly how these mechanisms of action help manage hypertension, but studies suggest that nebivolol might:

  • Decrease heart rate
  • Decrease heart muscle contractions, which reduces the force with which the heart pumps blood
  • Influence the activity of renin, which is a naturally-occurring enzyme that helps control blood pressure
  • Promote the dilation of blood vessels, which enables blood to flow with less effort

Because Bystolic or Nebivolol generic is used in the management of hypertension, it is most commonly prescribed to people with high blood pressure. Doctors might also prescribe Bystolic for other purposes as they see fit.

Conditions treated by Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol

Doctors most commonly prescribe Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol for the management of high blood pressure, which is also called hypertension. Nearly one in three Americans has this condition, but not everyone who has it is aware they do. High blood pressure rarely causes symptoms unless it provokes a major issue such as heart attack or stroke.

Blood pressure is a measurement of the amount of force in a person's blood vessels when their heart is beating and at rest. When this force gets too high, blood pressure becomes elevated. Basically, high blood pressure means that a person's heart is working harder than it should to pump blood around the body. This can damage blood vessels.

In part because of this damage, elevated blood pressure is strongly linked to a higher risk of serious cardiovascular issues, including stroke and heart attack. For this reason, research suggests that lowering blood pressure can also reduce the chances of experiencing major cardiac events.

Doctors might also prescribe Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol for other conditions not listed here.

What to know before using Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol

Prior to using Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol, it's important to keep the following in mind.

  • Before using Bystolic or generic Bystolic, tell your doctor about any medical conditions you already have and any medications you take (especially diabetes, heart problems and heart medications). Bystolic can exacerbate certain health issues and negatively interact with some medications. Also, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. There is insufficient evidence to determine whether using Bystolic or a Bystolic generic while pregnant might harm a fetus.

  • Take this medication exactly as directed and do not skip doses. Suddenly stopping the use of this medication without tapering off can exacerbate or provoke serious heart problems.

  • Take Bystolic medication at the same time each day. If you miss a dose and it's far from the time of your next scheduled dose, take the missed dose and then resume your regular dosing schedule. If you miss a dose and it's near the time of your next dose, take the next scheduled dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double up on doses. If you think you have taken too much of this medication, contact a poison control center immediately.

  • Plan to see your doctor regularly while using this medication so they can monitor your health status. If you are planning to have surgery, make sure your surgeon is aware you take Bystolic.

  • Nebivolol can impair your thinking and reaction times. For this reason, it's important not to drive or operate machinery while taking Bystolic until you know how your body responds to the medication.

  • Bystolic is not meant to be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle. While taking this medication, it's important to eat a healthy diet and exercise on a regular basis.

  • Avoid using Bystolic and alcohol simultaneously, as alcohol can increase the risk of serious side effects.

  • Consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking this medication might alter the way it affects your body.

  • Store this medication at room temperature and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not dispose of this medication in the trash or by flushing it down a drain; consult your pharmacist for proper disposal instructions.

Bystolic or Generic Nebivolol FAQ's

The proper Bystolic dosage varies depending on the patient and condition being treated, so it's important to follow your doctor's directions.

Bystolic comes in tablet form and several strengths, namely:

    • Bystolic 2.5 mg
    • Bystolic 5 mg
    • Bystolic 10 mg
    • Bystolic 20 mg

The most common dosage is 5 mg per day. Your doctor might increase this dosage at two-week intervals if lower dosages do not prove effective. The maximum dosage for Bystolic is 40 mg per day.

Bystolic and Generic Nebivolol both contain the same active ingredient: nebivolol HCL. This ingredient is a beta adrenergic receptor that helps lower blood pressure and decrease hypertension.

Not all versions of this medication will be available in the same forms or dosages. In many cases, generic versions cost less than a brand-name prescription. If you're not sure whether a brand-name or generic option is right for you, consult your doctor. The generic alternative is manufactured by a different company than the one that makes the brand product.
