CAPHOSOL (SUPERSATURATED CALCIUM PHOSPHATE RINSE)

Caphosol Description

Caphosol contains 2 aqueous solutions, one phosphate and the other is a calcium solution that will be combined to form a Supersaturated Calcium Phosphate Rinse that can be prescribed to prevent and treat oral mucositis, a common problem of high-dose chemotherapy or radiation.

Oral mucositis from chemo or radiation treatments may begin 5-10 days after treatment starts and could last 1-6 weeks. If you are aware of upcoming cancer therapy, you can ask your doctor about steps to take to minimize the side effects and symptoms of oral mucositis before or while you are using Caphosol.

Keep Your Mouth Moist and Clean

Caphosol is an oral rinse and is not meant to be swallowed; however, the ingredients are not dangerous or harmful if swallowed by accident. As a saliva substitute, Caphosol resembles the natural saliva in your mouth but is not designed to increase your production of saliva. Treatment is usually recommended for the duration of your chemotherapy to help your mouth, tongue, and throat stay moist and clean so the pain and severity of mouth sores and dryness can be reduced.

Conditions Treated by Caphosol

Your doctor may also prescribe Caphosol if you have the condition called Xerostomia (dry mouth). This may result from certain medications you are taking or part of the aging process, or there is a small risk your dry mouth is due to a condition that affects your salivary glands.

Conditions that cause hypo-salivation are not just annoying, saliva is important for neutralizing acids made by bacteria in order to prevent tooth decay, limit the growth of bacteria, to wash away food particles, and the enzymes in your saliva helps with digestion.

Before the Doctor Prescribes Caphosol

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding in case there are any health risks involved if you happen to swallow some of the Caphosol rinse. At present, there are no known interactions with Caphosol and other medications or products, but you should still discuss any health concerns with your doctor and list any current OTC or Rx drugs you use or take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements.

Caphosol Proper Use

Once the Supersaturated Calcium Phosphate Rinse has been mixed together as instructed, use it right away. Do not eat or drink for at least 15 minutes after using Caphosol. Keep Caphosol out of children’s reach and away from pets.

Possible Side Effects of Caphosol

There are no reports of common side effects when Caphosol is used as directed. Should you experience the following symptoms, you should seek medical assistance right away;

  • Hives
