CYKLOKAPRON INJECTION (TRANEXAMIC ACID)

Cyklokapron Injection Description

Cyklokapron Injection contains Tranexamic Acid, an antifibrinolytic agent that may be administered by a surgeon prior to, during, or after certain medical procedures to reduce the risk of bleeding. These procedures may include: knee or hip arthroplasty; the surgical reconstruction or replacement of a joint; cardiac surgery; the surgical removal of your prostate gland; and certain dental or surgical procedures for those that are hemophiliacs. The administration of Cyklokapron Injection is carried out intravenously and is sometimes followed up with Cyklokapron tablets to be taken orally for a time as specified by your doctor or surgeon.

Tranexamic Acid Reduces Risk of Blood Loss

Some individuals have a medical condition that causes their body to break down blood clots too quickly, which means the bleeding won’t stop and your wound won’t heal. Once the Cyklokapron Injection has been administered intravenously, it prevents an enzyme called plasmin from binding to and degrading the fibrin which is formed from fibrinogen during the clotting of your blood. This action allows your blood to clot and stem the flow. Cyklokapron Injection reduces the need for blood transfusions in those with clotting problems.

Conditions Treated by Cyklokapron Injection

There are two types of hemophilia, A and B. Hemophilia A is the most common and is caused by a deficiency of factor VIII, a protein your blood lacks that creates your clotting problems. Hemophilia B is also known as Christmas disease, named after the first known person to be diagnosed with this distinct type of hemophilia, or factor IX deficiency hemophilia. Factor IX is a genetic disorder caused by an imperfection or absence of this clotting protein.

It is a myth that hemophiliacs will bleed out from minor external wounds. Internal bleeding is the real threat as hemorrhaging in joints such as ankles, elbows, and especially knees can put this person in danger unless the bleeding is diagnosed and stopped as quickly as possible. Hemophiliacs do not bleed faster or more abundantly than others, they bleed longer.

Before Cyklokapron Injection is Administered

Ask your doctor about the safety of a Cyklokapron Injection if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Explain other medical conditions you have and list any OTC or Rx drugs you take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. This will help your doctor determine if Cyklokapron Injection is the right medication for you.

Cyklokapron Injection Precautions

This is a short-term medication and once you have undergone your surgical procedure, your doctor may recommend six to eight days of the oral Cyklokapron. Tell your doctor if you are taking hormonal birth control as a Cyklokapron Injection can increase your risk of developing blood clots. You may be instructed to use non-hormonal methods of birth control until your treatment period has ended.
