Dovobet Ointment Description

Dovobet Ointment (Interchangeable with Taclonex) is a prescription strength topical corticosteroid that may be prescribed to treat psoriasis when first line treatments have failed to produce any improvement. Dovobet Ointment contains two active ingredients, Betamethasone Dipropionate and Calcipotriene and is classed as a potent corticosteroid so should only be applied when psoriasis flares up.

How Dovobet Ointment Acts on Skin Cells

When applied as directed, Betamethasone Dipropionate works by acting inside the skin cells to decrease the release of the inflammatory substances like prostaglandins that cause the swelling, redness and itchy patches of skin.

Calcipotriol is a vitamin D derivative that helps reduce skin cell production so the appearance of the raised plaques is diminished and normal skin cell growth is supported. Each one of these active ingredients is available as stand-alone products but together they are more efficacious and multiple daily applications may be lowered to just once a day.

Information About Psoriasis

Dovobet Ointment may be prescribed by your doctor to treat plaque psoriasis, a chronic, returning skin condition that is characterized by inflammation and thick red patches covered by silvery white scales. Plaque psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease whereby your immune system begins to attack your own tissues for reasons unknown.

Your skin cells usually divide and replace themselves every 28-30 days, but those with psoriasis have an acceleration of this process. As more and more new skin cells appear, the old cells have not had time to shed and so they build up into noticeable scaly patches. Psoriasis can typically be seen on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. Psoriasis is not curable or contagious, but can be controlled by the use of medications, such as Dovobet Ointment, and avoidance of any known triggers.

Before You Use Dovobet Ointment

Be sure to provide your doctor with a complete medical history before you begin to use Dovobet Ointment. It may not be safe for you to apply Dovobet Ointment if you have liver or kidney disease, or a disorder of calcium metabolism. List all current OTC, Rx, and herbal meds you currently take or use, including dietary or vitamin supplements. This can help your doctor determine if Dovobet Ointment is the best treatment for you.

Proper Use of Dovobet Ointment

Dovobet Ointment should not be used to treat erythrodermic, exfoliative or pustular psoriasis. Dovobet Ointment is for topical use only and should be applied sparingly in a thin layer. Betamethasone Dipropionate/ Calcipotriene should not be applied on skin that is affected by viruses, fungus, acne, rosacea, ulcers or parasites. Do not cover or bandage the treated area unless instructed to do so as this can increase the effects of Dovobet Ointment and cause adverse side effects.
