DRONTAL (PRAZIQUANTEL/PYRANTEL PAMOATE)

Description of Drontal

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Drontal is a broad-spectrum oral dewormer medication that your veterinarian may prescribe as a treatment or maintenance medication for your cat or kitten. Drontal contains two active ingredients, Praziquantel/Pyrantel Pamoate, in order to target tapeworms, hookworms, and roundworms to keep your feline happy and healthy. Outdoor cats are more likely to have worms that indoor cats, but even being indoors does not mean they will be worm-free.

Most infected cats do not show signs of having worms; however, larger amounts of worms can cause weight loss, vomiting and diarrhea, irritation around the anus and failure to thrive. Some worms can also be passed on to humans and on rare occasions can be a cause of serious human disease. For these reasons, regular treatment of cats and kittens to prevent or eliminate worms is very important.

How Drontal Works to Kill Worms in Your Feline

Praziquantel is an anthelmintic drug that causes paralysis and severe spasms in the tapeworms’ muscles. The tapeworms disintegrate in the intestines and are absorbed but you may notice traces of them in the cat’s stool. Pyrantel Pamoate targets hookworms and roundworms by affecting their nervous system resulting in paralysis. This action causes the worms to release their grip in the intestines and they are passed through your cats’ feces.

Common Worms Treated by Drontal

Tapeworms consist of multi-segments that can break off and still survive as each segment has its own reproductive organs. Fleas are the intermediate host for tapeworms which are usually swallowed by the immature flea larvae. Once the flea matures and it finds its way to your pet, their bite irritates the skin and grooming can result in your cat swallowing the worm infested flea. The tapeworms then attach to your pets’ intestines. Using a good flea product on all of your pets can help cut down on the risk of worms.

Roundworms are the most common parasite for pets. Outdoor cats may eat small rodents that are host to roundworm larvae. These worms then mature and reproduce in your pet and can also pose a threat to humans.

Hookworms are also intestinal parasites that can be contracted from soil. As your pet does his business in infected soil, grooming can be an ideal way for the larvae to be ingested. These can pose a threat to humans as well.

Before You Administer Drontal

Drontal should not be given to kittens younger than 6 weeks old or less than 1.5 lbs. Ask your veterinarian if Drontal is safe for pregnant or nursing cats. Wash your hands after pilling the cat to be certain you do not accidentally put your fingers in your mouth.

Proper Use of Drontal

Drontal may taste bitter to your pet so have your veterinarian administer the tablet to avoid possible vomiting. If you try to hide Drontal in a treat, your cat may not receive the full dose. If you suspect you or another family may have been infected with worms, see your family doctor before taking any medication.
