What is Epclusa?

Epclusa is a pill that's swallowed once a day to treat long-term hepatitis C (Hep-C).

What is Epclusa used for?

Adults and children over 6 years old (or people who weigh more than 37 pounds) can use Epclusa to treat chronic hepatitis C infections. Chronic, or long-term hepatitis C infections are usually caused by the following hepatitis C virus (HCV) strains: genotype 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

It can be used by people who have cirrhosis (compensated cirrhosis), or by people who have advanced (decompensated) cirrhosis and are using ribavirin.

In adult patients, clinical trials show that Epclusa has a 98% cure rate for people with these types of hepatitis infections.

What are the side effects of Epclusa?

Common Epclusa side effects include headache and feeling tired. When used with ribavirin, side effects include headache, feeling tired, loose stools or diarrhea, nausea, sleeplessness, and low red blood cells.

Serious Epclusa side effects include:

  • Slow heart rate with symptoms such as (feeling dizzy, faint, or lightheaded, extreme weakness or tiredness, feeling confused, memory loss, becoming short of breath, or having chest pain). This can be dangerous or deadly, so get medical help right away if you notice any of these problems, especially if you also use Amiodarone (cordarone).
  • Hepatitis B reactivation. If you ever had hepatitis B, it could be hiding inside your body and return when you start using Epclusa. This can cause major liver problems that may be fatal. Your doctor will monitor you regularly for hepatitis B before starting Epclusa and while using Epclusa to ensure that it is safe for you to continue treatment with Epclusa.

What you should know before using Epclusa

Before using Epclusa, tell your doctor about all your medical problems, including:

  • If you have HIV-1 infection
  • If you are on dialysis
  • If you have kidney problems
  • If you have ever had a liver transplant
  • If you have any other liver problems besides hepatitis C
  • If you have ever had a hepatitis B infection

Also inform your doctor:

  • If you are taking any other prescription medications, herbs, vitamins, or over-the-counter supplements (including rifampin, St. John's wort, carbamazepine, sofosbuvir or velpatasvir)
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed

Do not start taking any new medications or over-the-counter supplements while on Epclusa without asking your doctor. Many medications can interfere with Epclusa, or cause dangerous drug interactions, so ask your doctor first before trying anything new.
