EUCREAS (VILDAGLIPTIN/METFORMIN)
Eucreas Description
The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
Eucreas contains two antidiabetic drugs, Vildagliptin/Metformin, to help people with type 2 diabetes gain better control over the amount of glucose in their blood. When your pancreas does not or cannot produce sufficient amounts of insulin, or your body is not using it properly, you are a type 2 or non-insulin dependent diabetic. Some people are able to control their glucose levels better with a proper diet, exercise, being more active, and giving up tobacco while others need medicinal help.
How the Active Ingredients of Eucreas Work in Your Body
Vildagliptin is an enzyme called dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that suppresses the breakdown of two gut hormones by DPP-4 in order to allow these hormones to stimulate and prolong the secretion of insulin so glucose cannot build up in your bloodstream. Metformin decreases the amount of sugar the cells in your liver produce and increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin. It also works after a meal by delaying sugar absorption from the intestines into your bloodstream so a sugar spike is less likely.
Eucreas Only Treats Type 2 Diabetes
Eucreas is prescribed to treat type 2 diabetes and is usually recommended after treatment with Metformin alone has failed to control glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic or long-lasting disease that makes it difficult to regulate blood sugar. Eucreas works with the insulin in your body which is why it is not prescribed for type 1 diabetics, as their pancreas has stopped producing insulin altogether. Eucreas is not a substitute for healthy eating and regular exercise. It is important to include a healthy diet and exercise program as part of your diabetes treatment plan.
Before You Take Eucreas
Eucreas is only for adults aged 18 years and older. Ask the doctor if there are any risks while taking Eucreas when you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding. List any current over the counter and prescription drugs, herbal remedies, and vitamin or dietary supplements you take or use as the doctor may need to adjust dosages of some meds so as not to interfere with Eucreas.
Make sure the doctor is aware if you have any other medical conditions such as kidney or liver problems, excessive use of alcohol, diabetes complications, or heart problems. These conditions may affect your ability to safely take Eucreas.
Things You Should Be Aware of When Taking Eucreas
If you are taking Eucreas with other diabetes medications, you may need to monitor your blood glucose levels for signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Symptoms include cold sweats, tremors, or confusion, unusual tiredness, and nausea. Do not start, stop, or adjust the dosage of any meds without consulting a doctor first as this can play a role in glucose levels.
If you are scheduled for any dental or surgical procedures that require you to ‘fast’ from the evening before, talk to the doctor about whether to take Eucreas or not.
