FIBRISTAL (ULIPRISTAL ACETATE)
Description of Fibristal
Fibristal is prescribed to treat moderate to severe signs and symptoms of uterine fibroids in adult women. Uterine fibroids (UFs), leiomyomas, or myomas are benign tumors that are characterized by excessive or irregular uterine bleeding, which may lead to the development of anemia, pelvic pressure or pain, increased urinary frequency or constipation, and possibly interfere with fertility.
How Fibristal Helps with Fibroids
Fibristal belongs to the class of medications called selective progesterone receptor modulators. Ulipristal Acetate, the active ingredient in Fibristal, works by blocking the effect of progesterone on the endometrium (lining of the uterus). Progesterone is responsible for the development and growth of fibroids and by blocking this hormone, Fibristal causes fibroids to shrink and become less painful.
What Are Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are growths of the uterus that can range in size from microscopic to the size of a grapefruit or even larger. The majority of fibroids are small and do not cause any symptoms at all. In most cases of uterine fibroids, there is never just one.
The most common are called intramural fibroids; these develop within your uterine lining and grow inward, increasing the size of your uterus. Sub-serosal fibroids grow under the outside covering of your uterus, expanding outward through the wall. The least common fibroid is called sub-mucosal and are found under your uterine lining causing the most problems with heavy bleeding and prolonged periods.
Before You Take Fibristal
Fibristal should not be prescribed to women who have uterine, cervical, ovarian or breast cancer as some cancers are hormone receptor-positive to progesterone. Explain other medical conditions and allergies you have to your doctor and list all OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements. Your doctor can them determine if Fibristal is the right drug for you.
Important Information About Fibristal
You should not take Fibristal if you are pregnant or may become pregnant as it could be harmful to your unborn baby. Use effective non-hormonal birth control while taking Fibristal, such as condoms or a diaphragm, to prevent a pregnancy and as a precaution against the effects this medication may have on birth control methods that contain hormones.
