What is a Freestyle Libre Sensor?

A Freestyle Libre Sensor is a part of the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System. It is a thin one-inch wide circle with a tiny filament (slim needle) that goes under the skin and works with your monitor to constantly check your blood sugar levels.

What is a Freestyle Libre Sensor used for?

When used in conjunction with the FreeStyle Libre Flash Glucose Monitoring System, the Freestyle Libre Sensor checks your blood sugar levels every minute (and stores readings every 15 minutes) for up to 14 days. It can remain on skin while swimming (as long as the sensor does not go below 3 feet of water for more than 1 hour), taking a shower, or doing exercise.

What are the side effects of using a Freestyle Libre Sensor?

A Freestyle Libre Sensor is inserted under the skin and attached with an adhesive (sticky) pad, so possible side effects from this device include:

  • Redness
  • Bruising
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Bleeding at the insertion site
  • Scars or discolored skin

There is also a small (unlikely) chance that the sensor or needle may break during insertion in such a way the pieces remain stuck under the skin.

What you should know before using a Freestyle Libre Sensor

The Freestyle Libre Sensor can be used by people over 4 years old. It is not for use by pregnant women or dialysis patients. Do not touch the sensor after it is applied; take care not to bump it against objects or wear tight clothing over it. It must be removed before undergoing a CT Scan, X-Ray, MRI, or diathermy treatment. The Freestyle Libre Sensor is designed to be worn for up to 14 days after a 1-hour warm-up period. The sensor picks up sugar levels from interstitial fluid under the skin. These readings may not exactly match blood glucose levels.

  • How do you remove a Freestyle Libre Sensor?

Pull up the edge of the adhesive (sticky tape) that keeps the Sensor stuck to your skin. Slowly peel it away from your skin in one motion to remove the Freestyle Libre Sensor.

  • How do you apply a Freestyle Libre Sensor?

To apply the sensor, first clean a spot on the back of your upper arm. Then use an applicator to apply the sensor. When the sensor is applied, a small (1/4th inch) filament is inserted just under the skin and held in place with a small sticky pad.
