Glyquin XM Generic Description

Sun damage, stress, hormones, inflammation, and your diet could be responsible for hyperpigmentation; those darker-skinned areas on your face, hands, and other visible body parts. Some individuals may choose to live with it, while others are searching for a way to eliminate those dark patches, freckles, or ‘old-age’ spots. Glyquin XM or Hydroquinone generic is a topical cream that may be applied to help lighten darkened skin areas. The generic is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

Hydroquinone Helps Reduce Melanin Production

Once applied to the dark skin areas as directed, Hydroquinone is absorbed into your skin cells and decreases the production of melanosomes while increasing their breakdown. Melanosomes are melanin pigment granules in your skin’s pigment cells, known as melanocytes. This action is carried out by inhibiting the activity of the enzyme needed to make melanin, called tyrosinase. Be patient as the effects of Hydroquinone are not immediate.

Conditions Treated by Hydroquinone

Freckles, liver or old age spots, and sun damage can change your skin’s appearance and not everyone likes the outcome. Melasma is a skin condition that can be blamed on exposure to sunlight, but is more commonly due to pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone medications for menopausal symptoms, and anti-seizure drugs.

Cholasma is basically the same as melasma, but occurs during pregnancy and is sometimes called “the mask of pregnancy”. You may notice splotches of darker skin areas around your face, forearms, and other sun-exposed areas. The dark line from your belly button to your pelvic bone known as the linea alba has always been there but is not as noticeable when your skin is all one color. However, there is an increased production of melatonin along that line when you become pregnant, now called the linea nigra, which means black line.

Before Hydroquinone Generic or Brand is Prescribed

Ask a doctor about the safety of applying Hydroquinone while pregnant, if you become pregnant, or if you are breast feeding. You should not combine Hydroquinone with other skin products that contain hydrogen or benzoyl peroxide or you could cause dark staining. Avoid prolonged sun exposure while using Hydroquinone as the treated skin will be more sensitive to UV rays.

Proper Use of Hydroquinone

You need to be patient, as it can take six to eight weeks before any changes in your skin become noticeable while applying Hydroquinone as directed. Hydroquinone is not recommended for use on children younger than twelve years of age. Do not use Hydroquinone topical on open wounds or on sunburned, wind burned, dry, chapped, or irritated skin.

Possible Side Effects of Hydroquinone

  • Redness
