Product description written by Dr. Ami Patel, PharmD (Aug 10, 2020)
What is Glyxambi?
Glyxambi (generic name Empagliflozin/Linagliptin) is a once-a-day diabetes pill that is used along with diet and exercise to help keep blood sugar levels under control. If you have a history of heart disease along with type 2 diabetes, then Glyxambi lowers your risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack. Glyxambi is a combination of two diabetes medicines: Linagliptin (Tradjenta), and Empagliflozin (Jardiance).
Conditions treated by Glyxambi
Adults with type 2 diabetes use Glyxambi to lower blood sugar in combination with exercise and diet. It's also used by adults with heart disease and type 2 diabetes to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death.
What are the side effects of Glyxambi?
Possible Glyxambi side effects include:
Runny nose, stuffy nose, or sore throat
Sinus or throat infection (Upper respiratory tract infection)
Genital yeast infection (penis infection in men or vaginal infection in women)
Can cause redness, pain, foul odor, itching, swelling,or discharge from the penis or vagina
Urinary tract infection (UTI)
If you have a UTI, you may experience one or any of the following symptoms:
Feeling like you cannot control your pee because you need to pee more often
Feeling burning or pain when you pee
Pain in your pelvis (lower part of your stomach)
Back pain or fever
Throwing up
Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach)
Call your doctor immediately if you think you have a UTI. A possible Glyxambi side effect is a very serious UTI which requires treatment in a hospital, so let your doctor know immediately if you start having any symptoms.
Rare, but serious Glyxambi side effects include:
Increased ketones in blood and urine (ketoacidosis)
You may feel sick to your stomach, or throw up. Some people feel tired, have stomach pain, or have trouble breathing. This can happen even if your blood sugar is less than 250mg/dL, so be sure to check for ketones in your urine if you have any of these symptoms.
Dehydration or Low Blood Pressure
You can feel dizzy, lightheaded, or faint, especially if you try standing up too fast. This is more likely to happen if you're over age 65, have kidney problems, take blood pressure medicine, or eat a low salt diet.
Low blood sugar
This can leave you feeling shaky, sweaty, weak, tired, hungry, confused and irritable, feeling like your heart is racing, or give you a headache. Before starting Glyxambi, ask your doctor to check your risk for developing low blood sugar (especially if you take Glyxambi with other diabetes medicine). Understand how to bring your sugar back up safely, as directed by your doctor.
Kidney problems
A possible Glyxambi side effect is that it may hurt your kidneys. Routine blood tests are recommended before and while using Glyxambi to make sure your kidneys stay healthy. Call your doctor immediately if you suddenly start to drink or eat less (for example, if you get sick), or if you start losing liquid (through diarrhea, vomiting, or blood loss) because this can make it more likely for Glyxambi to harm your kidneys.
Increases in fat or cholesterol in your blood. Sometimes Glyxambi can make your cholesterol levels go up, so your doctor will monitor your blood tests regularly.
A severe genital infection around the anus
Glyxambi may harm the tissue under the skin around the anus, and cause redness, pain, or swelling in your genital area.
Allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of face and tongue, trouble breathing)
Severe joint pain
Skin blisters, or thinning skin
This is not a complete list of all Glyxambi side effects. Call your doctor immediately if you think you are experiencing any side effects from Glyxambi.
What you should know before using Glyxambi
Glyxambi should only be used by people with type 2 diabetes who are over age 18. It is not for people with type 1 diabetes. Do not use Glyxambi if you have diabetic ketoacidosis (a condition where there is too much acid in your blood). Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when your blood sugar is too high for too long. It happens when there are extra ketones in your blood or urine.
Glyxambi is not for use in people with severe kidney problems or dialysis.
Do not use Glyxambi if you have or have had heart failure or a weak heart.
Do not use Glyxambi if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney, pancreas or liver problems before taking Glyxambi. Avoid drinking alcohol while using Glyxambi. Tell your doctor if you change your diet or start to eat less before using Glyxambi. If you're planning to have surgery, tell your doctor before starting Glyxambi. Do not use Glyxambi if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Glyxambi.
Before starting Glyxambi, talk to your doctor if you have any of the following:
a history of trouble with peeing (urination) or urinary tract infections (UTI)
are currently eating a low-salt diet
using or planning to use any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including insulin, rifampin, vitamins or water pills (diuretics)
