What is Imbruvica?

Imbruvica is an oral medication used to treat certain types of cancer. The active ingredient in Imbruvica is known as ibrutinib. Imbruvica (ibrutinib) is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, which works by blocking certain proteins that help cells grow and divide. Imbruvica (ibrutinib) stops the action of Bruton tyrosine kinase, which normally helps B cells (white blood cells that make antibodies) grow. When B cells grow too fast, they can turn into cancers of the blood.

Conditions that are treated by Imbruvica.

Imbruvica (ibrutinib) treats the following conditions: Mantle Cell Lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)/Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma (SLL), Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia, Marginal Zone Lymphoma, and chronic graft versus host disease. All of these conditions, except for chronic graft vs host disease, are different types of blood cancers. Chronic graft versus host disease is a complication that can occur after a transplant.

Notable side effects of Imbruvica (ibrutinib) are:

  • excess bleeding
  • bruising
  • infections
  • cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)
  • high blood pressure
