Invirase Description

Invirase or the generic alternative Saquinavir Mesylate is prescribed in combination with Norvir and other antiretroviral medications to treat the infection caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus responsible for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV is a retrovirus, meaning it needs to hijack the body’s CD4 cells, which are certain proteins found on your immune cells they need in order to make new viruses. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

How Invirase Works as Part of Your HIV Treatment

Invirase belongs to a class of medications known as protease inhibitors that block the action of protease, an enzyme that is needed by HIV to multiply. The HIV virus invades the cells of the immune system, particularly the white blood cells which are known as CD4 T-helper lymphocytes. Invirase prevents the HIV-1 protease enzyme from working which means that new copies of the virus that are produced are faulty and cannot infect more CD4 cells.

Invirase is used together with Norvir, another anti-HIV medicine. A low-dose of Norvir increases the amount of Invirase in the blood and is used to boost the effect of the Invirase, rather than to have any effect on the virus itself.

HIV Therapy Involves Several Antiviral Drugs

There is currently no effective cure for HIV, but it can be controlled with proper treatment and medical care. HIV is treated with antiretroviral therapy (ART) that usually consists of a combination of several anti-HIV meds in case the virus becomes resistant to one of the medication. Invirase or the generic Saquinavir Mesylate is one of several medications that lower the amount of virus in the body, known as the viral load, which then allows your immune system to gain strength and fight opportunistic infections.

If left untreated, HIV reduces the number of these cells in the body, making the person more likely to get infections or infection-related cancers. Unlike some other viruses, the human body can’t get rid of HIV completely. So once you have HIV, you have it for life and it can advance on to AIDS without proper medical intervention.

Before Invirase is Prescribed

It is important to provide your doctor with a complete medical history before you begin treatment with Invirase, especially if you have a history of any of liver disease, diabetes, hemophilia, high cholesterol, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, or a history of Long QT syndrome.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding to be aware of any potential harm your unborn or nursing baby may be at risk for.

Invirase Precautions and Recommendations

Life-threatening side effects may occur if you take Invirase with certain medications. Make sure to provide your doctor with a list of all Rx drugs, over-the-counter medications, supplements and vitamins you are taking before you begin treatment with Invirase.
