Junel Fe Description

Until you are ready to plan and start a family, there is Junel Fe, an oral birth control pill that contains two hormones; a progestin and an estrogen that will help prevent a pregnancy. Junel Fe is supplied as 28 pills with the first 3 weeks containing 1mg of Norethindrone Acetate and 20 mcg of Ethinyl Estradiol, or 1.5 mg and 30 mcg, and the last weeks’ worth of pills do not contain any hormones but does have a small amount of iron (ferrous fumarate) in them. This is not enough to treat anemia but helps with blood loss during menstruation and keeps you in the habit of taking a pill each day.

When taken regularly as directed, Junel Fe tricks your pituitary gland into thinking you are already pregnant in order to reduce the amount of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone, which are essential for ovulation to occur. By suppressing ovulation, the risk of becoming pregnant is reduced but not eliminated completely as indicated. No oral birth control method is guaranteed to be effective 100% of the time. Junel Fe also changes the lining in your uterus so there is a decrease in its blood supply. And by making the cervical mucus thicker, sperm are less likely to be able to travel through the cervix to reach and fertilize an egg.

Conditions Treated by Junel Fe

In addition to preventing an unplanned pregnancy, some women take Junel Fe to relieve the pain they experience during menstruation that lasts longer than three days or if you have heavy periods. Who would have thought that birth control pills can help clear up your acne, too? This is because as you are going through puberty, there is an increase in androgens. These are male hormones that become active during the teenage years in men and women. This activity includes the sebaceous glands producing more oil (sebum) that can clog pores and form pimples, nodules, and white or blackheads.

Before You Take Junel Fe

Be certain you are not pregnant or breast feeding before you start taking Junel Fe as it can be harmful to your unborn or nursing baby. Tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list any OTC or Rx drugs you take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements to determine if Junel Fe is safe for you to take.

Warnings for Junel Fe

Do not smoke while taking Junel Fe as it can increase your risk of serious side effects, including stroke, heart attack, and possible blood clot. If you have a history of hypertension, check your blood pressure regularly as oral contraceptives can cause it to rise. Some women may experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting during the first three months of taking Junel Fe. If this continues past this time period, consult with your doctor as to other causes.
