Lanvis Description

The active ingredient in Lanvis is called Thioguanine, a cytotoxic antimetabolite taken as a chemotherapy drug for the treatment of some types of leukemia. This form of cancer is found in your blood and bone marrow as a result of rapidly produced white bloods cells that are abnormal that can crowd out your normal blood cells.

How Antimetabolites Work on Cancer Cells

Antimetabolites like Lanvis are comparable to the normal substances within your cells, so as the cancer cells incorporate Lanvis into their cellular metabolism, they are now unable to divide. As the cells become unbalanced in their growth, the cells die. Lanvis is called a cell-cycle specific drug that is designed to attack the cells at a specific phase, in this case, it is when the cells are dividing (mitosis) and making more cancer cells.

Types of Leukemia Treated by Lanvis

Acute myeloid leukemia, referred to as AML is a cancer that is caused by DNA damage to the developing cells in your bone marrow which makes blood cell production go haywire. Your bone marrow produces immature cells that grow into myeloblasts, which are leukemic white blood cells. These are abnormal cells that are not able to work as they should so they build up and can crowd out your healthy cells.

Acute lymphocytic leukemia, or ALL, is the most common type of childhood cancers. ALL happens when a bone marrow cell has errors in its DNA that tells the cell to keep growing and dividing whereas a healthy cell would stop dividing and die. Even though the abnormal cells do not function properly, they can still build up and crowd out your healthy cells.

Before You Take Lanvis

You should not take Lanvis if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Your ability to conceive or father a child can be affected by taking Lanvis but reliable methods of contraception should still be implemented as a precaution. Advise your doctor of any medical conditions you have, especially: decreased kidney or liver function; Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or an inherited deficiency of an enzyme called thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT).

Lanvis Precautions

Inform your doctor of other Rx medications you take as well as OTC meds, vitamins, and herbal remedies. Some drugs may interact negatively when taken with Lanvis and cause unwanted side effects. Beware of any activities such as sports that could cause bleeding as Lanvis (Thioguanine) reduces the number of platelet cells in your blood which can result in a failure to clot efficiently.

Possible Side Effects of Lanvis

  • Joint pain
  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • Nausea and vomiting

More serious side effects that you must see your doctor about include painful/difficult urination, unusual bleeding/bruising, blood in urine/stools, fever or chills, and a cough or hoarseness.
