What is Lotemax?

Lotemax Ophthalmic Suspension Eye Drops contain Loteprednol etabonate, a corticosteroid prescribed to treat inflammation, swelling, itching, and redness of the eyes brought on by allergies, infections, or surgery. Ophthalmic corticosteroids are not recommended for long-term use as they can raise the pressure inside the eye.

When used as directed by your doctor, Lotemax Eye Drops work by suppressing the immune system's inflammatory response to a threat or injury. This action stops certain chemicals, including prostaglandins, from flooding the area to start the healing process. While this is a beneficial process, these chemicals also create inflammation, pain, and the symptoms of redness and itching.

The generic alternative of Lotemax Eye drops, called Loteprednol, is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

What are Lotemax Eye Drops used for?

If you are having cataract surgery, your doctor may provide a prescription for Lotemax Eye Drops or Lotemax generic to reduce the irritation caused by inflammation and to keep your eyes moist while healing. The most common cataract removal procedure is called phacoemulsification. This involves making a small incision in the edge of the cornea to create a small opening in the membrane that surrounds the lens. A surgeon then inserts an ultrasonic probe to break up the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. These fragments are then suctioned out and an intraocular lens (IOL) implant is positioned in its place.

Lotemax Eye Drops may also be prescribed to treat inflammation that occurs due to exposure to allergens, such as pollen or pet dander. If your immune system overreacts to the presence of an allergen and releases histamine, the inflammatory response can leave your eyes feeling uncomfortable.
