Marcaine Injection Description

You may be scheduled for a minor dental or surgical procedure that only requires a local anesthetic to block the pain temporarily. Marcaine Injection contains Bupivacaine Hydrochloride, a local anesthetic that starts to work quickly and can be administered by a doctor shortly before any procedure begins so you are not aware of any pain.

This is also beneficial as a nerve block for short-term pain relief following a surgical procedure and as an epidural to make labor and delivery more comfortable. A local anesthetic means the medication is administered to affect a restricted area of your body; it does not put you under.

Stop Pain Messages to Your Brain

Once your doctor administers the Marcaine Injection to a specified area, Bupivacaine Hydrochloride will work to stop sodium from entering the nerve ending at the source of your pain or where the procedure will take place. This will prevent the build-up of an electrical signal so it cannot pass along nerve fibers to the pain center in your brain. Without this signal, your brain has no indication that anything is happening.

Marcaine Injection Uses

Your dentist can also put Marcaine Injection to good use during tooth extractions, repairing or filling a tooth, and even for cleaning your teeth if your gums are more sensitive to the scraping and scaling a trained hygienist does to keep your mouth healthy.

Your doctor can perform a discography to diagnose a pain source. This is done with your doctor using a Marcaine Injection in one or more lumbar areas until you notice the pain in your lower back, groin, hip, or leg has stopped. Once the correct area has been located, you may receive an injection that causes a nerve block to try and relieve your pain or at least provide the information the doctor needs to determine if further treatment or surgery can help alleviate the pain altogether.

Before You Receive a Marcaine Injection

Ask your doctor about any risk to receiving a Marcaine Injection while you are breast feeding or pregnant, unless you are to receive a Marcaine Injection for an epidural during labor and delivery. Make your doctor aware of other medical conditions and allergies you have and provide a list of non-prescription drugs or Rx medications you use or take, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements so it can be determined if a Marcaine Injection is safe for you.

Important Aftercare from a Marcaine Injection

If you are released from the medical facility after your procedure has been completed, you may still be under the influence of the Marcaine Injection. Take care not to perform any activity that could injure or harm the affected area without realizing it. This includes eating, drinking, or chewing anything if you had a dental or surgical procedure done in your mouth or cooking and food prep if your hand/fingers are still numb.
