MYDFRIN OPHTHALMIC SOLUTION (PHENYLEPHRINE HYDROCHLORIDE)
Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution Description
Eyesight is precious and regular ophthalmic exams can help you to keep your sight for as long as possible. During an examination with your optometrist, it may be suggested that your pupils be dilated so more light is allowed in and there is a better view of the back of your eye. This is especially helpful if you have a higher risk for eye diseases, especially as you become older.
Glaucoma can be diagnosed earlier when your pupils are dilated. By being able to examine your retina when your pupils are dilated, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration are two retinal diseases that can be diagnosed by the optometrist and monitored.
Pupil Dilation Occurs by Blocking Certain Alpha Receptors
The active ingredient in Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution is Phenylephrine Hydrochloride. After instilling the prescribed amount of solution into your eyes, this mydriatic drug will act on the alpha receptors located on the muscle that dilates your pupil and causes it to contract, making your pupils widen. This part of the eye exam is usually done after other testing. You may be instructed to have someone drive you to and from this appointment and to bring sun glasses for your ride home as the dilated pupils allow a lot of light in and cannot contract until the medication wears off after a few hours.
Conditions Treated by Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution
If you are scheduled for cataract extraction surgery, such as phacoemulsification, your eye surgeon will usually instill drops to temporarily paralyze the ciliary muscle of your eye, followed by Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution for dilating your pupil.
You may be surprised to know what ophthalmologists can tell through a complete eye exam. Systemic diseases including hypertension, stroke, and cancer can be detected. Your ophthalmologist may be the first one to tell you that you have diabetes from seeing changes in your retina.
Before Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution is Prescribed
It is unknown at this point in time whether using Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution is harmful to an unborn or nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, become pregnant, or are breast feeding so a decision can be made about the risk of this medicine. Tell your doctor about other medical conditions or allergies you have and list all OTC and Rx meds you currently take or use, including alternative medications, to determine if Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution is safe for you.
Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution Precautions
Remove contact lenses prior to the administration of Mydfrin Ophthalmic Solution, wait at least 15 minutes before inserting contacts again or when doctor has completed the exam or procedure and says it is okay. You should not attempt to drive yourself home after dilation as your vision will be somewhat impaired, especially if it is bright or sunny outside.
