NALCROM (SODIUM CROMOGLICATE)
Nalcrom Description
If you or a family member has food allergies, your doctor may recommend Nalcrom in case you eat something that contains an allergen so you can prevent or reduce the severity of your symptoms that may include nausea, diarrhea, hives, and stomach cramps.
Allergic reactions affect different parts of your body depending on what the allergen is. For food allergies, your gastrointestinal tract is likely to be the source of concern. Some people may experience their mouth or tongue tingle when eating certain fruits. This is not a food allergy but a pollen allergy and simply cooking the fruit before eating will usually solve that problem.
How Nalcrom Works
Nalcrom contains Sodium Cromoglicate, a mast cell stabilizer that will work to inhibit mast cell degranulation, a cellular process that is triggered as an immune response to the allergen that is thought of as a threat to cause you harm.
Mast cell stabilizers also inhibit the activity of a number of types of white blood cells as well as limit the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals. This will reduce your symptoms when you take Nalcrom if you suspect you have eaten something that may contain an allergen, or to prevent the allergic reaction if you are not sure of the ingredients in the foods you will be eating.
Conditions Treated by Nalcrom
A certain protein in foods is usually what sets off an allergic reaction. The first time you eat food with this protein in it, your immune system reacts by creating immunoglobulin E (IgE), specific disease fighting antibodies that will recognize this particular protein if or when it appears again in something you eat. And when this happens, IgE antibodies and other chemicals are triggered and try to protect you by expelling the threat. This is why you may experience vomiting or diarrhea as a way to force out the danger.
Before You Receive a Nalcrom Rx
Ask your doctor if Nalcrom is safe to take if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Explain other medical conditions or allergies to your doctor and list all OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements. This will help your doctor decide if Nalcrom is right for you.
Nalcrom Precautions
Do not give Nalcrom to children under 2 years of age. If you are still experiencing symptoms of food allergies after your treatment time has expired as prescribed, revisit your doctor. If after 2-3 weeks the allergy symptoms have not improved, talk to your doctor as you may need to increase your dose. Keep Nalcrom and other medications out of children’s reach and do not share with anyone else.
