Norprolac Description

Norprolac contains Quinagolide Hydrochloride, a dopamine agonist that is usually prescribed as a first-line treatment for those diagnosed with prolactinoma. This is a non-cancerous tumor of the pituitary gland that produces a hormone called prolactin that stimulates milk production usually after childbirth.

Your doctor can perform a blood test to check prolactin levels in your blood or schedule an MRI to look for any signs of tumors in your pituitary. Possible causes of excessive prolactin production could be other types of pituitary tumors, certain medications you are taking, an underactive thyroid gland, or a chest injury.

Norprolac Can Raise Dopamine Levels

Because dopamine is one of the main regulators of the production of prolactin, Norprolac works to increase dopamine, a hormone produced naturally in your body. This action interferes with the manufacturing of prolactin and can help to shrink the tumor. Prolactinomas occur more commonly in women under the age of fifty years but are also found in older women and men.

Symptoms of Prolactinoma for Women and Men

Prolactinoma can cause women to have irregular periods, or stop their monthly cycle altogether; vaginal discharge; acne, excessive body or facial hair; and a milky discharge from the breasts even when not nursing or pregnant.

Men may experience erectile dysfunction, decreased body and facial hair, and less common, enlarged breasts (gynecomastia). Both sexes may experience headaches, vision changes, infertility, and low bone density.

Before You Start Taking Norprolac

Tell your doctor about any over the counter medications and Rx drugs you take, including herbal preparations and dietary or vitamin supplements as any of these could interfere with taking Norprolac safely. Discuss your medical history before taking Norprolac so your doctor can decide if Norprolac is the right medicine for you.

Precautions for Norprolac

You may have a sudden drop in blood pressure when you first start taking Norprolac, so be careful when rising from a lying or seated position. Norprolac may restore fertility so a reliable birth control method may be required if you are of child-bearing age but do not want to become pregnant. Discuss taking Norprolac if are pregnant or become pregnant during treatment as your doctor may recommend postponing this medication. Drinking alcohol can increase the side effects of Norprolac.
