OCUFEN (FLURBIPROFEN)
Description of Ocufen
Ocufen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is administered as drops when undergoing certain ophthalmic surgeries such as cataract removal or a procedure to allow better drainage of the fluid (aqueous humor) in your eye that may be building up due to a narrow drainage system. Pressure in your eye can build from the excess fluid and damage your optic nerve unless something is done to help relieve it or the result is glaucoma.
How Ocufen Suppresses Inflammatory Chemicals
Ocufen or generic Flurbiprofen blocks the action of cyclo-oxygenase (COX), an enzyme in your body that produces various chemicals, including prostaglandins. Your body uses prostaglandins when there is a threat, injury, or various diseases and conditions present as an immune response that causes swelling, inflammation, and pain. By suppressing this action, you are able to find relief from the pain while the swelling and inflammation is decreased. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
Ocufen Uses
If you are going to have surgery to remove a cataract, your doctor will want to dilate (widen) your pupil to make it easier for removing your lens and replacing it with a man-made intraocular lens. This is done as an out-patient procedure and Ocufen can be administered pre-operatively. Once the new lens has been inserted, the pupil dilation will help to prevent the formation of scar tissue as well as minimize any pain and swelling. You may find that you are more sensitive to light than normal so sunglasses may be needed when you are outdoors.
Before You Instill Ocufen
Tell your doctor if your are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or are breast feeding before using Ocufen as there may be risks to your unborn or nursing baby. To determine if Ocufen is safe for you, explain other medical conditions and allergies you have to your doctor and list any OTC or Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements, to determine if Ocufen is the right ophthalmic drug for you.
Important to Know Before and After Using Ocufen
There may be burning or stinging soon after administering Ocufen or Flurbiprofen generic, but it should calm down with continued use. Do not drive a vehicle, operate machinery, or take on any task until your vision has cleared up after instilling Ocufen. If you are also using other drops, ask your doctor how long to wait before or after administering Ocufen. If you usually wear contact lenses, remove them before using Ocufen and wait the recommended time before reinserting insert them.
