Time to do Something About Your Endometriosis Pain?

For those that are experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of painful periods, painful intercourse, or pelvic pain between periods caused by endometriosis, ask your doctor about Orilissa. There is no cure for endometriosis, but Orilissa is the first approved oral medication prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain of endometriosis.

How the Active Ingredient of Orilissa Helps Treat Endometriosis

Orilissa contains Elagolix Sodium, a gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist (GnRH) that works by reducing the production of estrogen and progesterone (ovarian-stimulating hormones) by suppressing luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormones. This action will help to reduce your symptoms but will not reduce the endometrial tissues that are growing outside of your uterus.

What is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis occurs when tissue that looks and acts like endometrial tissue is found to be growing outside of the uterus. This tissue will continue to act like your uterine lining in that it responds to hormonal signals, specifically estrogen from your ovaries that signal the endometrium to grow or thicken in preparation of a fertilized egg. So when there is no fertilization, estrogen levels fall and you begin your period. As the uterine lining sheds, so does the misplaced tissue that has no where to send the blood and it is like you bleed internally, causing your pain.

Before Orilissa is Prescribed to You

Inform your doctor if there’s a chance you may be pregnant or if you are breast feeding to avoid any potential harm to an unborn or nursing baby. Tell your doctor about all medical conditions or allergies you have and provide a list of OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use to be certain Orilissa will be safe for you to take.

Precautions While Taking Orilissa

You should use a reliable form of a non-hormonal contraceptive such as condoms or spermicide to avoid an unplanned pregnancy while taking Orilissa and continue to do so for at least 1 week after treatment stops. Before undergoing any dental or surgical procedures, inform the medical staff that you are taking Orilissa. To minimize possible bone loss during treatment, your doctor may prescribe another drug to help prevent this from happening.
