What is Palladia?

Palladia®, also known as Toceranib, is a kinase inhibitor that blocks the activity of a group of enzymes called receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). It is not a chemotherapy drug and is instead described as a form of targeted therapy that inhibits specific RTKs located on the surface of cancer cells as well as their blood vessels. Chemotherapy drugs are non-specific and kill all rapidly dividing cells.

What Conditions in Dogs are Treated by Palladia?

Palladia for dogs is used to treat Patnaik grade II or III, recurrent, cutaneous mast cell tumors with the presence or absence of regional lymph node metastases. Mast cell tumors in dogs appear to be related to the mutation of RTKs and KIT, which is the gene in the body that is responsible for the production of RTK. KIT and RTK mutations lead to the continuous activation of tumor cells.

What are the side effects of Palladia?

The most common side effects that are associated with Palladia include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Anorexia
  • Lethargy
  • Neutropenia
  • Emesis
  • Lameness
  • Weight loss
  • Musculoskeletal disorder
  • Blood in the stool, gastrointestinal bleeding, or hemorrhagic diarrhea

Palladia may also cause vascular dysfunction, which is a complication that may result in thromboembolism (including pulmonary thromboembolism) and edema. Serious and sometimes fatal gastrointestinal complications such as perforation and ulceration have occurred in dogs treated with Palladia, although the occurrence is rare. If a gastrointestinal ulcer is suspected, the administration of this medication must be discontinued and symptom treatment should begin.

Do not use Palladia and call your veterinarian if any of the following occur:

  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Bright red blood in vomit or stool
  • Black tarry stool
  • Frequent vomiting
  • Diarrhea which occurs more than twice in 24 hours
  • Refuses to eat

What you should know before buying Palladia online

The following factors should be considered before you buy Palladia (Toceranib) online:

Palladia is not recommended for dogs used for breeding purposes, or for pregnant or lactating dogs.

The presence of systemic mast cell tumor prior to initiating treatment may cause the dog to be more susceptible to clinically significant mast cell degranulation along with serious systemic side effects. The possibility of systemic mastocytosis should be ruled out, if possible, before treatment with Palladia begins.

This medication has been linked to the onset of severe diarrhea or gastrointestinal bleeding that necessitates prompt treatment, which may include the interruption of Palladia or a dose reduction depending on how severe the clinical symptoms are.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be taken with caution in conjunction with this drug due to the increased risk of gastrointestinal perforation or ulceration.

The safety of using of Palladia for dogs weighing less than 5 kilograms or younger than 24 months of age has not been evaluated.

Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, or nursing mothers should be especially careful when handling this drug as it disrupts the formation of new blood vessels and may be detrimental to an unborn baby or nursing infant.

Keep children away from Palladia. Do not let children touch urine, stool or vomit of treated dogs.

Special care must be taken by anyone that administers Palladia:

  • Wash hands after you have touched Palladia tablets
  • Do not crush, split, or break tablets
  • Give tablets immediately after taking them out from the bottle
  • Wear gloves if touching tablets that are wet or broken
  • Be sure your dog eats the entire dose if the Palladia tablet is inside food
  • PALLADIA remains in the stool, vomit and urine of dogs, so use gloves to clean up after your dog.
  • While your dog is taking PALLADIA, place their stool or vomit, and any paper towels used to clean up after them in a sealed plastic bag to protect anyone who is managing the trash.
  • Do not place any items soiled with your dog’s stool, urine or vomit with other laundry
