PARSITAN (ETHOPROPAZINE)

Parsitan Description

The active ingredient of Parsitan is Ethopropazine, a phenothiazine drug that may be prescribed if you have Parkinson’s disease and want to improve your muscle control and reduce stiffness so you are able to perform daily tasks unaided. Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive disorder that can cause tremors of your hands, arms, legs, and face, impair your balance, and slow your movements. Parsitan has also been effective for treating the symptoms some people may be bothered by when taking psychiatric medications, such as severe back and neck spasms.

How Parsitan Improves Muscle Control

When taken as directed, Parsitan works to balance certain chemicals in your body, namely acetylcholine, by decreasing its activity. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter released by nerves and is essential for the communication between your nerves and muscles. By reducing its actions, your muscle control improves so your movements are not as jerky and stiff and walking is easier. Parsitan and other anticholinergic drugs are usually not recommended to elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease as it can cause confusion.

Conditions Treated by Parsitan

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a result of neurons in a part of your brain dying. Some of these neurons, or nerve cells, produce dopamine, a chemical messenger responsible for sending messages to the part of your brain that controls your movement and coordination. As PD advances, dopamine levels drop and your movements become stiff and uncontrolled and your balance becomes impaired.

Parsitan has been able to help control some of the tremors or spasms that people may experience when taking antipsychotic drugs because their dopamine levels have been increased to settle their psychoses but now they are having involuntary movements, including an oculogyric crisis which is a muscle spasm that makes your eyes move rapidly.

Before You Take Parsitan

Discuss other medical conditions and allergies you have and list any OTC and Rx medicine you currently take or use, including homeopathic remedies and dietary or vitamin supplements. Combining Parsitan with other drugs could produce unintended side effects or change how it will work for you.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but Parsitan (Ethopropazine) is an oral treatment that will allow you to move around easier and safer as you carry out your daily tasks in a timely manner.

Important Information About Parsitan

The active ingredient in Parsitan may decrease saliva production and although this may help with drooling for those with PD or are taking antipsychotic meds, this can increase your risk for gum disease and cavities. You may find that chewing sugarless gum helps with your dry mouth. You may experience drowsiness or dizziness so if you still drive a vehicle, do so with caution. Beware of an increased risk of over-heating as your ability to sweat may also be impaired.
