PROMECTIN PLUS (ABAMECTIN/PRAZIQUANTEL)
Promectin Plus Description
Part of good horse husbandry is to make certain they are dewormed regularly so their health is not compromised by fever, diarrhea, or colic. This is especially important for the mares, foals, and yearlings. Your veterinarian can help to plan a parasite control program that will meet your needs and the needs of your horses.
Promectin Plus or generic Abamectin/Praziquantel is a combination of 2 anti-parasitic drugs that will eliminate common worms and bots that can infect your horses. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
How the 2 Anti-Parasitic Drugs of Promectin Plus Work
Once Promectin Plus is administered as per directions, Abamectin works to block the transmission of electrical activity in the nerve and muscle cells of the parasites which results in them becoming paralyzed and expelled from the animal through their feces, or the parasites starve.
Praziquantel works on the tapeworms by causing severe spasms and eventual paralysis of the worm’s muscles that results in their death and they are also expelled from the animal in their feces. Other worms affected by Promectin Plus include lung worms, pin worms, threadworms, bots, and small and large strongyles that appears to be the cause of 80%-90% cases of colic in horses.
Conditions Treated by Promectin Plus
Is deworming really necessary for horses? Well, there are over 150 internal parasites that can infest your horses, so the answer is YES. Your horse can have any or all of these worms at the same time, and most likely the parasites will be at different stages of growth and reproduction. The only way to control these pests is to have a deworming program in place. This will help to prevent your horse from having colic, diarrhea, weight loss, a potbelly, stomach ulcers, and sores in their mouth.
Before Promectin Plus is Administered
Ask your veterinarian if Promectin Plus is safe to give to a horse that is pregnant, being bred, or is nursing a foal. Tell your vet about other medications or health issues any of the horses have or are currently being treated for before you give Promectin Plus to be certain that it is safe to do so.
Promectin Plus Proper Use
Promectin Plus is dosed according to weight so keep a record of previous doses given and current weights as you may need to give more as the young colts and fillies are growing. Ask your veterinarian for a proper dosage chart so each horse will receive sufficient amounts of Abamectin/Praziquantel to kill the parasites. Keep Promectin Plus away from heat, light, and moisture. Do not store where children or animals have easy access to it.
