What is Spiriva Respimat?

Spiriva Respimat (generic name tiotropium bromide) is an inhaler ("puffer") medicine used to help you breathe better. When used every day, it can help prevent episodes of coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and trouble breathing. It's for people 6 years and older who have asthma or COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It contains medicine that keeps your lungs open so more air can get into your body and you can breathe better.

Before you use Spiriva Respimat for the first time, insert the cartridge into the inhaler and lock it in place. Keep squirting it into the ground until a fine mist appears. After you see a mist, squirt the inhaler into the ground three more times. This is called "priming the pump". Now your inhaler is ready to use. If you do not use your inhaler for more than 3 days, squirt a puff into the ground once to make sure a mist appears.

If you do not use your inhaler for more than 21 days, then you must prime the pump again: Keep squirting it into the ground until a fine mist appears. After you see a mist, squirt the inhaler into the ground three more times. Now the inhaler is ready for you to use.

Children using Spiriva Respimat should be supervised by an adult. Spiriva Respimat should only be sprayed into the mouth. Avoid spraying in or near your eyes.
