What is Supartz?

Supartz, also marketed as Supartz FX, is an injectable medication that may be prescribed to help relieve knee pain from osteoarthritis. By helping reduce knee osteoarthritis, Supartz can help improve mobility and help people live a healthy, active, productive life.

Sodium hyaluronate, the active ingredient in Supartz (also known as Supartz FX), is similar to the fluid that surrounds the joints in our bodies. It reduces pain by acting as a lubricant and shock absorber. Research shows that Supartz may reduce pain and improve function both short and long term.

Supartz, known as a viscosupplement, is available in single-use, prefilled syringes with 2.5 mL of medication per syringe. It is often given to patients who have not responded to other treatments such as acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy.

After removing the synovial fluid currently in your knee (via a process called arthrocentesis), your doctor will inject Supartz directly into the knee joint space. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the injection process, but some doctors may recommend the use of a local anesthetic when injecting Supartz FX.

What is Supartz used for?

Supartz is used to reduce knee pain and make the knee joint more mobile and functional. It is a non-surgical, non-pharmacologic therapy for people with osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis in the knee occurs when the cartilage on the ends of the knee bones wears down over time. This is caused by repetitive motion, wear and tear, and stress on the joint. Symptoms of osteoarthritis typically develop slowly and are most likely to appear after age 40. Those symptoms may include pain during or after movement, tenderness when you touch the joint, stiffness (especially right after you wake up), reduced flexibility, and a grating sensation when you use your knee. Osteoarthritis in the knee can make it hard to stand, walk, or climb stairs, which can significantly affect your quality of life.
