VENOFER (FERRIC HYDROXIDE SUCROSE)

Venofer Description

Venofer contains an injectable iron replacement called Ferric Hydroxide Sucrose that is administered to patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) that do not have enough iron in their blood. Without sufficient amounts of iron, your body is unable to make enough red blood cells to keep you healthy and this results in iron deficiency anemia. Venofer is given either intravenously or into a dialysis line by a doctor or trained professional in a hospital, clinic, or dialysis treatment center.

Venofer Can Help Increase Red Blood Cell Production

Once administered as per doctor’s recommendations, Venofer will help make a protein called hemoglobin which is responsible for bringing oxygen to tissues in your body so the tissues and muscles work productively. Venofer is not a cure for iron deficiency anemia or chronic kidney disease, but it will help your body produce red blood cells.

Risks of Chronic Kidney Disease

Diabetes and hypertension are the 2 main causes of CKD. When your blood sugar is high, your kidneys, heart, blood vessels, and your eyes can become damaged unless brought under control. Having high blood pressure causes damage to the walls of your arteries as the force of blood rushes through and the result could be a heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease. This is why it is so important to have regular doctor exams to keep track of rising blood sugar or blood pressure.

Before Venofer is Administered

Tell your doctor if you are or may be pregnant before being administered Venofer as there could be a risk to the baby. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx medications you currently use or take, including herbal remedies and vitamin or dietary supplements to determine if Venofer is safe for you.

Venofer Precautions

It is important that you keep all doctor and lab appointments in order to monitor your progress. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of your other meds without discussing it with your doctor as this could affect your Venofer injections.
