Verzenio - Abemaciclib

What is Verzenio?

Verzenio (Abemaciclib) is a prescription medication used to treat a certain type of breast cancer (HR+/HER- breast cancer) that has spread to other parts of the body. It is taken alone or in combination with an aromatase inhibitor drug or with the anti-estrogen drug fulvestrant (Faslodex).

Verzenio is a "CDK4&6 inhibitor" medication. It works by disrupting CDK4&6 proteins, which cause breast cancer cells to rapidly grow and divide.

What are the side effects of Verzenio?

The most common and concerning Verzenio side effects are:

  • Diarrhea: up to 90% of people may experience diarrhea, usually in the first month of treatment. The diarrhea may be severe.
  • Neutropenia: occurs in up to 37% of people talking Verzenio. Neutropenia is a condition where a person has an abnormally low amount of neutrophils – a type of white blood cell involved in immune function. Neutropenia is associated with an increased risk of infections.
  • Venous thromboembolism: these are blood clots in the veins, including serious blood clots such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. They may occur in up to 5% of people taking Verzenio combined with fulvestrant.
  • Liver toxicity: may occur in up to 4% of people taking Verzenio.
  • Inflammation of the lungs.

What you should know before using Verzenio

People taking Verzenio require regular blood tests to monitor for side effects. As well, they should report certain symptoms to their physician, as these may indicate serious side effects.

Verzenio can cause harm to the fetus when taken by pregnant women. As such, it is important for women who may become pregnant to use effective birth control during treatment with Verzenio and for three weeks after treatment ends.

What is the proper dosage of Verzenio?

When taken alone, the usual dose of Verzenio is 200 mg taken by mouth twice a day.

When taken in combination with fulvestrant, the usual dose of Verzenio is 150 mg taken twice a day.

Verzenio can be taken with or without food, and should be taken at the same times every day. Verzenio tablets must be swallowed whole, and should not be crushed, split, or chewed.

Dose modification recommendations are in place for various Verzenio side effects, depending on the side effect and its severity. As such, it is important for people who experience Verzenio side effects to discuss them with their prescriber.

How long does it take Verzenio to work?

There are no clinical studies that demonstrate exactly when Verzenio begins working, although it is reasonable to assume that it begins to affect tumor cells very early on after treatment initiation.

What is the cost of Verzenio?

Verzenio can be acquired from online pharmacies such as at a much lower price. The cost of Verzenio depends upon the amount prescribed.
