XIBROM (BROMFENAC)-(now Branded as Bromday)

Xibrom Description

For those scheduled to undergo cataract surgery, the doctor may prescribe a non-steroidal anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) to be started 24 hours following the procedure in order to help relieve pain and reduce swelling. Xibrom, or generic Bromfenac, is an ophthalmic NSAID that can be administered throughout the recovery period of two weeks or as instructed by the doctor. The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.

During this time, the ophthalmologist or surgeon may advise wearing a protective eye shield or glasses to minimize the risk of bumping your eye or rubbing it. Also refrain from bending, lifting, or straining as this will increase the pressure inside the treated eye and possibly cause the tiny incision to open.

How Xibrom Works

Once Xibrom is instilled as directed, it inhibits the activity of the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzyme, 1 and 2. COX-1 regulates the baseline levels of prostaglandins when your body is working normally and COX-2 is activated to increase production of prostaglandins when there is a threat of infection, disease, or injury. This results in the inflammation, pain, and redness and is part of the healing process. By reducing this immune response, the pain is reduced and inflammation is under control so you can recover and rest in comfort.

Information About Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is usually done as an out-patient procedure so arrange for a ride to and from the hospital or clinic where the procedure is being done because your vision will be temporarily affected. Patients remain awake during this procedure and given drops to dilate their pupil and numb the eyeball.

The method used more commonly for cataract surgery is called phacoemulsion and it involves a tiny incision made in the front of the eye so a needle-thin probe can be inserted into the lens material where the cataract has formed. This probe sends out ultrasound waves to break up or emulsify the cataract and suction out the pieces. The artificial lens is then slid into the empty lens capsule. The implant is made of plastic, acrylic, or silicone and is now a permanent part of your eye.

Before You Use Xibrom

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breast feeding before using Xibrom (now branded as Bromday), in case it may be harmful to an unborn or nursing baby. Discuss other medical conditions or allergies you have with your doctor and list any OTC and Rx drugs you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements, so it can be determined if Xibrom is the right medicine for you.

Xibrom Precautions and Proper Use

If there are other ophthalmic prescriptions to use, wait at least 5 minutes before or after instilling Xibrom as instructed. You should not drive, operate machinery, or perform any tasks that are considered unsafe while using Xibrom because it will impair your vision for a time. Take care not to touch the tip of the applicator directly to the treated eye or it could increase the risk of infection.
